How does this work.. The FEP-f1d5 talks about a node info endpoint, but the FEP states no obligatory endpoint. References lead to an old library that recommends /.well-known/x-nodeinfo2 (for that v2 library). How did a FEP become final without this crucial piece of information or am I simply missing that information in the finalised FEP?

@luceos I think the most important part of this proposal is "Requirements" section that says:

>Fediverse software SHOULD implement NodeInfo [NodeInfoRepository].

The reference leads to NodeInfo repository.

It is badly formatted, but otherwise seems to be correct.

GitHubGitHub - jhass/nodeinfo: NodeInfo defines a standardized way to expose metadata about an installation of a distributed social networkNodeInfo defines a standardized way to expose metadata about an installation of a distributed social network - jhass/nodeinfo

@luceos Like others have said, the FEP process is very loose. FEP-f1d5 looks to me to be an informational document about history and caveats of NodeInfo in “Fediverse” software. I believe it should not have a requirements section or the SHOULD statement (NodeInfo is not typically, if ever, required for AP-related federation). I also don’t see any rationale to support that position. That said, these are just my personal opinions and observations. YMMV.

Nodeinfo was created by some Diaspora devs to prove how much more popular their software was than my software; because we proved not long before that they literally lost 1 out of every 3 messages they attempted to deliver - over a period of like 5 years. Might've been 2 our of 3. I forget now. It was an obscene amount of messages. Gone. Vanished without a trace. Nobody talked these "little federation issues" but I had to - because I got blamed for it. "You must've done something wrong because Diaspora software is perfect."

If you want people tracking everything in the fediverse and measuring who has the most popular brand and how far their developers can piss, you're welcome to play that game and implement/install nodeinfo. I'll tell you right now that Meta is going to kick your butt when it comes to MAUs. I have more important work to do. I don't give a hoot about brands and horse races. I'm just creating software that does some really cool stuff that your software doesn't.

And this is why you won't find my current software in any of your silly little fediverse trackers.

Cheers.
