It's interesting how mainstream can have straight men or (occasionally) lesbians as protagonists, but never exclusively gay men OR straight women, because surely gamers would be horrified to have mandatory romance with male characters, or only male romance options.

Something to think about for any game developers looking to bring about the online discourse end of times.

This also shows how the bias of media companies probably doesn't represent some perfect market efficiency.

You could argue that a AAA game targeting primarily gay players doesn't have a large enough market to justify the cost. But women are half the world's population, and people attracted exclusively or otherwise to men... probably more than half the population? Nor is that half the population probably intrinsically uninterested in games, nor incapable of being lured in with romance or sex.

So there's probably a large untapped market you could make a lot of money from. But it doesn't really fit with the personal biases of executives, or what they believe the target demographics of the whole medium of "video games" is. Nor are they interested in taking risks by investing in an unproven market. Nor slowly building up a new market segment that won't be profitable in this quarter's earnings or until some time after.
