Framework :fedora: :ubuntu:

We asked visitors to the Framework booth at
LTXexpo what we should build next. This is what they had to say. What do you think?

@frameworkcomputer I like the idea of an arm64/risc-v framework...

@doskel @frameworkcomputer saw that and I'm seconding that one.

That and finally expanding to some high purchasing power markets, pretty please 🥺 🇨🇭

@doskel @frameworkcomputer Unfortunately RISC-V is going to be hard. There are no SoCs nor IP-cores out there, which are even able to compete with an raspberry4.
Compared with RP4 the best StarFive SoC is slower, needs more energy, has no 2D hardware acceleration and 3D ends in PowerVR driver hell. :(

ARM64 is way better, but by far best performance is delivered by Qualcomm + Windows. Linux drivers are a problem.

@frameworkcomputer Printer or mobile phone would be soooo awesome...

@frameworkcomputer A phone could ship with stock android or a Linux distro too!

@frameworkcomputer yeah, trackpoint, touchpad with proper buttons, proper keyboard…

@frameworkcomputer upper centers "TrackPoint!" is on the point!

Basic Patents have expired years ago!

* With three separate mouse buttons!

Edit: For the folks "liking" this post, likes are almost useless in the fediverse, respond with a post to create buzz towards framework puters.

@gom @frameworkcomputer

+1 on the trackpoint, helps in tight spaces and if using gloves.

@frameworkcomputer cmon guys. Framework phone is a no brainer! Or an official Fairphone collab

@frameworkcomputer I like the "free the nipple" comment.

I'm for the mechanical keyboard, but my main problem with laptop has always been screen size (eye surgery makes smaller monitors a strain) and tiny keyboards (I have large hands, put together, I'm an orc). I always wanted a full-sized and TKL layout (I love me inverted T in its own column) mechanical with Cherry Brown-like keys in a laptop form. Just haven't found one.

@frameworkcomputer
i think providing several colored pens probably wasn't the best idea... although it looks nice :)
maybe if you check color by color...
first pink, because whoever is willing to write in pink must be serious about it...

@frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org Hmm, according to that board, you should build a riscV mogus phone.

@frameworkcomputer a motherboard for one of the compute module carrier boards (like the pi cm4) please. I know you won't be able to have full tb4 on the expansion ports with any of them but it would still be a great option to have.

@frameworkcomputer also different keyboard layouts. I'd kill for separate pgup/dn/home/end keys.

@frameworkcomputer agree a lot with the phone and the amongus guys, hopefully one that can run Linux and not just Android
@frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org
A Thunderbolt Dock would be great. But I also Luke the idea for an non-smart TV.

@frameworkcomputer there's probably not a lot of money to be made in the phone market. But should you make a repairable phone WITH a headphone jack (I'm looking at you, Fairphone 😠) then I'd be first in line.

@frameworkcomputer
Honestly my dream framework device would be a steam deck competitor (especially if it had the trackpads)

On the other hand if you made a phone I would immediately pre order it, the phone space is garbage right now

(Particularly if the phone had the ability to have expandable storage)

@frameworkcomputer toothbrush & coffeemashine :blobcouple: things which need no Upgrades and could be the same product for the next decade.

@frameworkcomputer 100% here for the multiple times RISC-V shows up there - even Google has said they're working on getting RISC-V as 1st tier in Android, I believe.

That, and maybe joining up / working with Fairphone, doing the same sort of thing in that space? If and when they finally make it to North America, I'm fairly confident I'll be switching that way for my next phone, too. ;)

@frameworkcomputer Also 100% on someone else's 'phone, but with mechanical/physical keyboard' - I wish I didn't kill my Cosmo Communicator and they did a better job with software updates when I had it.. but even an old 'Droid'-style slider, even if it has to be a case.
If Fairphone is at one end of that spectrum, the likes of the PinePhone at the other are also super interesting.

@frameworkcomputer
I see phone on there a lot and that makes sense - but Google took a stab at it with Project Ara and One Army with Phonebloks so be careful there. I would like to see you guys come out with a gaming mouse! Replicable switches, battery and thumb rest rubber would all keep my mice out of the dead tech drawer.
Also lol #FreeTheNipple 😂 I hope to make it to LTX some time 🤞

@frameworkcomputer Since PC Engines is discontinuing the APU platform, how about a replacement or collaboration, yielding a small networking device that be the basis for routers, small NAS devices, and so forth?

Small board, at least two network interfaces, and either a x64, ARM, or RISC-V platform. Long-term commitment to form factor, BIOS updates, and so forth.

@frameworkcomputer I'm with the calls for a phone ^^ Give it a good camera and android and I'm almost sold already ^^

@foosel Not tempted by Fairphone? They already have the repairable Android phone gig down fairly well.

@foosel Fair enough, camera is the one thing I never care about at all on phones so I don't pay much attention to them (I know that makes me odd :D).

@foosel I think the upcoming @shiftphones might be interesting. But we'll have to wait for reviews. Having an Oled screen is a big plus over the Fairphone for me.

@foosel @frameworkcomputer If you want to sell a phone with android, that's fine. But please also offer your phones either with Linux pre-installed or offer a no-OS DIY option like you do with your laptops.

I switched over to a Linux phone over a year ago and while there certainly are complications to it, it feels like true freedom and I'm never going back to Android. Perhaps a collab with #postmarketOS would be in order.

@frameworkcomputer Y'all could DESTROY the printer market. But I'd like an OLED laptop.

@frameworkcomputer the TV's that are not smart. My goodness would that be amazing. Sick of these TV OS's

@connor
@pfs @frameworkcomputer
Even better if there was a place to attach a framework mainboard, no smart TV OS but still with the ability to have all the good things that come with a smart TV + A full computer in a compact form

@frameworkcomputer ARM laptop , RISC-V laptop, Linux-based handheld gaming device would be my top 3

@frameworkcomputer Make a phone with a headphone jack and you can have my money.

@frameworkcomputer A printer, I think it is the sector were rights to repair is the most absent. It's the far-west.

@frameworkcomputer
an e-reader! i beg. bonus points if it works with a stylus (to double up for notetaking)

@frameworkcomputer I'd love to see a framework phone or gaming handheld.

@frameworkcomputer Definitely a tablet, with multiple expansion card slots on the sides. One that has hardware that can boot mainline Linux is what I need in my life.

@frameworkcomputer Can I raise the idea of networking equipment? I've sorely disapointed by consumer iot crap and the pro sumer's have gone way too expensive or shady AF

@frameworkcomputer disappointing that someone used this to advertise their twitch channel :(

@frameworkcomputer I'd love to see a dock/hub that uses expansion modules, so I can swap in the connectivity I need. Ideally with a swappable mainboard, so I could upgrade when 80/120 gigabit USB hits the market

@frameworkcomputer dont say it dont think it dont say it dont think it dont say it dont think it dont say it dont think it dont say it dont think it dont say it dont think it

@frameworkcomputer
Making an arm or risc V device sounds awesome. Arm chips in particular could be used for very portable devices.

@frameworkcomputer very strong votes for printer, ARM64/RISCV, a phone of some sort, and an anti-smart TV.

Of course those are some of the hardest to invest to even get into the market, let alone succeed in 😅

I'd love to see some partnerships, which might be easier to accomplish, with the Mobile Linux space, and infrastructure support for the ARM/RISCV space tho.

Oh, and OLED/touch screen on Laptop.

@frameworkcomputer As reparable phones do already exist, things like TVs or Tablets seem more important to me. But after then, why not a phone...

@frameworkcomputer riscv would be amazing! I would buy that in a heartbeat.

@frameworkcomputer YES PRINTER

Also a phone would be sick esp. with the rise of mobile linux (i daily drive postmarketOS).
