I just learned that the package (cran.r-project.org/package=XiM) got some interesting updates in the development branch (github.com/rkward-community/Xi). XiMpLe is a simple tree parser/generator. For example it is useful to to read XML files into R objects, to get information out of and into nodes, and write R objects back to XML code. Originally it was made for the development of plugin.

It's not as powerful as the 'XML' package and doesn't aim to be, but for simple XML handling it could be useful.
