Calckey looks like it has some pretty awesome features. However, using it as a primary account would mean migrating and changing my handle. This makes me think that Bluesky may be onto something regarding "account portability" in the AT protocol. Being able to keep the same handle when migrating between providers sounds really appealing.
@carlwgeorge I'm not bothering to migrate. I just have another account over there. Mastodon will remain my main account and if people want to follow me there or here, either one is fine. (Same goes with my Pixelfed.)
@vwbusguy Perfect use of that GIF
@carlwgeorge We're going to try to make migration easier with post import. That's being tested, in fact!
@atomicpoet That's great, I know people that have migrated between Mastodon instances and were frustrated with losing their post history. But that isn't the same thing as keeping the same handle. Decoupling provider and identify intrigues me. I'm not an expert but that doesn't seem to be a possibility in ActivityPub.
@carlwgeorge I hope your honest views don’t lead to a throng of invite requests! (If you have an extra, ping? Jus’ sayin’). Before the portability issues are resolved I’m cautious to get too invested into what could essentially become a burner acct….
@carlwgeorge
if you host your own server you'll always be able to own your own handle, although I realize that's not possible for everyone. However even if you own your own domain and register it with them all your shit is still owned by blsky
@max Self-hosting isn't the same thing as account portability. If I switched from Fosstodon to self-hosting my handle will change. And it would change again if I got tired of self-hosting and switched back to a provider. That's a pain point.
As far as being "owned by blsky", right now my stuff is owned by Fosstodon, so what's the difference? In theory once they open up federation then self hosting an AT protocol server should be possible.
@max It's fine if you're not interested in Bluesky, but there are better uses of your time then trying to discourage others from being curious about it.
@carlwgeorge im definitely interested in it and keeping my eye on it, i just think its a topic that deserves some footnotes or asterisk because it could be potentially dangerous for the health of the internet moving forward. I'm not one to put my eggs in one basket, and im not opposed to new ideas, but blsky raises a lot of red flags for me
@carlwgeorge if you self host you can change the instance you're running; you can switch from mastodon, to miskey, to pixelfed or whatever, or run them all. Also the difference is that blsky is a known bad actor with an interest of capital. It's a product of silicon valley, the Californian ideology and capitalism. I believe due to the nature of blsky even if you don't host your account with them all traffic still gets routed through them, but i might be wrong. I just think cons outweigh pros
