Quick, someone talk me out of using #NixOS again. I lost so much time to dotfile config and window managers but Maybe It It Will Be Different This Time™?
The conversation so far
Me: Idk if I want to use Nix again. It was a bit of a pain.
Mastodon: Maybe you should date Nix
It's going great over here.
So I know I pretty much just threatened to reinstall #NixOS last week, but as of writing this, I still haven't picked a desktop environment.
The tally stands:
Who is more annoying?
Nix: 0
Me: 1
@joshleecreates Delightful, thank you for this scathing review. Unfortunately I find myself stuck at #8 and #10 for the exact same reasons as you. I'll add that not being able to trust bash scripts is a big pain.
@abmurrow I’m just friends with the author, although I agree with many of the points (and am a helpless member of the cult)
@joshleecreates @abmurrow spot on! It’s so addicted! I started with WSL. It crashed all the time. Now I’m setting up dual boot. It’s only crashes sometimes. Next will be my Intel NUC, then some VM’s on my new homelab running Proxmox, then my Lenovo Laptop…it will never end! I have a great Firewalla so networking is out of scope for now, but eventually I will probably build my own networking tools on NixOs too. Haha

*villian theme song intensifies*
Love it!
@joshleecreates If that ain't the truth, I don't know what is. I really can't think of many better ways of having set and forget servers that just work.
@abmurrow succumb to your inhibitions.
@abmurrow If I use desktop manger, I use Plasma, but for window manager I use hyprland as my preferences
@ndowens Plasma is of some interest. I haven't used it in ages and I assume Nix will prevent me from breaking my system too much. Plus, the battery life on the KDE Wayland session is pretty compelling.
@abmurrow Next time you spent 7 hours a Saturday night configuring network shares and editing GNOME dconf, ask yourself; “Will this get me laid?”
