Interesting read I found on a crypto mailing list.

"Please listen carefully and don’t hang up.

Those were the first words this unknown male caller said to me when my brother handed me the phone."

Why the NSA Called Me After Midnight and Requested My Source Code
The story behind my top secret coffee cup.

Come for the article, stay for the comments.

@tretch his pride in helping the NSA is quite baffling to me. I would have refused to cooperate if this was asked of me today, for sure. Even in 2000, just helping undermine the security software he made, and what's more he was willing to help for the paid version which he advertised as being secure... He should be ashamed of this, not put a mug on his shelf!

@Matter While I agree 💯 , it's hard for me to put myself in his shoes in 2000 and say without a shadow of doubt, "I would have told them to fuck off and hung up." when I got that phone call. I certainly wouldn't cooperated today.

It's a question of integrity, and I don't think he made the right choice, but hindsight is 20/20. I would hope that he is a little remorseful... I know I'd be.

I posted it not because I find him to be a hero - I simply find his experience/account to be interesting

@tretch yes I agree, I'm not sure what I would have done in 2000, but I'd like to think I would have at least thought about it for a while
