"The Disappearance of an Internet Domain"
or
How we could lose the .io TLD.
@shawnhooper You know some company is going to buy the TLD, double the renewal rates, and laugh all the way to the beach. <sighs>
@WTL @shawnhooper except I don’t think you can buy a 2 letter TLD
@mattrose @shawnhooper Either way this shouldn't be a real problem for at least a decade or so.
@WTL @shawnhooper If the article is right, the domain cannot be reopened - but I guess we'll see.
@WTL @shawnhooper I thought gTLDs had to be three characters or more to prevent exactly this sort of thing?
@alex @shawnhooper This may be the case, now that you mention it - sounds oddly familiar.
@shawnhooper can’t wait for it
@shawnhooper I heard rumours about the stability of the .io domain 3-4 years ago and luckily started to pivot my private domain to .dev.
Now it's finally time to find all the places where I still use the old domain. But I really wonder if ICANN will step in here, as so many high-value domains would be affected.
@stefanzweifel @shawnhooper I doubt it goes away. USSR went away 33 years ago and the .su domains still resolve. Someone will buy it.
@shawnhooper That's wild. I don't have an io domain but holy cow this is big.
