I've used and self-hosted Matrix extensively around 2017 and it seemed just fine. But it was in a three person context, so pretty simplistic.

@pmidden: The encryption is pretty poor; the server is heavy as hell to run; the general interaction is no better than IRC.

@pmidden Probably because a community doesn't need to selfhost things (for moderation), centralized platforms reduce moderation workload, there are no state resets (this is what kicked Techlore out of Matrix), better discovery & onboarding, etc.?
