It would build in federated comments about each episode, help discovery across the Fediverse and lessen dependence on Apple, Spotify, Google or centralized podcast servers, and all the content interactions with fans all federate to all platforms. This social feed could even be built into popular mobile apps, thus moving the conversation cross app.

@tchambers @arossp @funkwhale @Castopod That is actually kind of an argument against them, because podcasts are very much a media broadcast type of environment, not one inviting comment, necessarily.

Federation makes sense in a lot of discussion kind of systems, but a broadcast sort of mechanism that does not accept or desire comments doesn't really make sense in this environment. And I don't know a lot of podcast readers/listeners that have a built-in comment/feedback system for the podcast.

@otto42 @tchambers @arossp @funkwhale @Castopod I strongly disagree - I think discussion of podcasts is a huge and untapped need. Constantly want to talk about an episode after I hear it. This was slightly viable in the Twitter era, when it was just accepted that everyone was on there, and new episodes usually had an associated tweet. Extremely hard now.

@misc @tchambers @arossp @funkwhale @Castopod You can discuss it all you want, the question is do the podcast's creators want to discuss it with you?

Having the ability to reply to somebody because they posted a thing on the fediverse is not the same thing as having a discussion about it with other people. You can argue that it gives a single place to have the discussion, but that may not be the creator's intentions or desires.

@otto42 @misc @arossp

In the case of using @funkwhale or @Castopod it almost every use case it IS the author publishing directly to the Fediverse using that software.

@tchambers @misc @arossp @funkwhale @Castopod

I have not used that software, or heard of it before, and if it takes off then that's great. I'm not against it. I just don't think it necessarily fits the traditional idea of podcasts in all aspects for the very idea of federation.

It may fit more other cases than that traditional view doesn't, and if that changes how it works overall then that's a good thing. But that sort of adjustment has to happen naturally.

@otto42 @tchambers @arossp @funkwhale @Castopod The fact is, we had a sort of watercooler for podcasts in twitter, we don't have it anymore, I miss that, I suspect others do too, and this seems like one way to bring back some of that function, for podcasters who want it.

@misc @tchambers @arossp @funkwhale @Castopod

I have used and tested many podcast apps on my phone and in other assorted systems, and I've never seen any of them integrate a Twitter discussion into that.

So while you may have had a watercooler, it was distinctly an isolated one, because I don't know any app that facilitated its presence.

@otto42 @tchambers @arossp @funkwhale @Castopod The lack of features facilitating a behavior is not evidence of a lack of demand for such features, especially if people are engaging in the behavior anyway.

@misc @tchambers @arossp @funkwhale @Castopod

True, however, a demand for such a feature is not demonstrated by people using alternative methods to engage in similar behavior.

Basically you're suggesting to change the protocol from RSS to using federated stuff, but there doesn't seem to be a need or demand for it.

If you want to go to that length, then create a protocol to do such a thing, and create a site to host such protocols. If ppl flock to the site, then such demand exists.

@otto42 @tchambers @arossp @funkwhale @Castopod Well, to be fair, I wasn't proposing anything! I'm not sure of all the specifics of Tim's proposal, but you seemed dismissive of the idea that there might be demand for such social features with podcasts, and that's where I disagreed.

@misc @tchambers @arossp @funkwhale @Castopod

Oh yes, I am somewhat dismissive of such a proposal because I see podcasts as a one to many thing, as opposed to a many to many thing.

But, maybe I'm wrong. It has been known to happen.

@misc @otto42 @tchambers @arossp @funkwhale @Castopod
So unlike most news articles podcast publishers do not provide a comments section. But then again most online news media do not provide comments sections for editorials or columns either.
