This morning my wife grabbed her coffee, sat down at her computer, signed in, and immediately got a BSOD.

Happy Monday everybody. I hope you had a good weekend.

@mike if you don't mind me asking, what's a BSOD?

@tarcisiosurdi @mike ahh thanks, hate it when that happens.

Insert "she should use Linux" meme

@s31bz Yea, absolutely she could, but you should see this computer she's using. If my house ever burns down, it's going to be because of that laptop. The battery is swollen to the point the touchpad has popped out of the housing, and she still uses it. Her company sent a new one for her, but she just doesn't want to migrate to the other computer. It's quite literally scary to look at.

@mike @s31bz Transplant the HDD or SSD for her to the new laptop. That battery could very easily explode, especially if she's still using it.

@tripplehelix Unfortunately it's her work computer, not something we own, or I'd have thrown it down a flight of stairs (accidentally of course) already. It honestly freaks me out every time I see it. I don't want it in my house.

@s31bz

@mike @tripplehelix @s31bz I've got to side with Tom here - lithium batteries are super volatile and the swelling is literally the gases inside that have expanded. It's just a matter of time before the casing can't hold that expansion any further and it explodes. No job is worth that risk!

For safety reasons remove it immediatly.

What you both after is your choice, but safety first.

Send a request to the company. Your wife should go to office for hardware replacement by IT, a technician comes home or you get the allowance to replace the disk yourself.
Transplanting would be the cheapest way for all, but I know companies' IT and bet on 1...

@mike @s31bz One of my relatives who works from home had the same issue; battery swelling pushing the touchpad out. I removed the battery for him and he would just power it from the wall.

Is this an HP laptop by any chance? Bang & Olufsen IIRC?
