v:dw is by far the most useful acronym I've run across recently, much more relevant than tl;dr.

video: didn't watch.

@kly I'm gonna nick that one. Love it!

@kly I like tv;dw (too video; didn't watch) for the symmetry with the original and allusion to television (which I also don't watch)

@ilmari @kly also less confusion with vim… I think it’s more the semicolon than the t but I guess for overall consistency I’ll converge to tv;dw as well. @static

@mirabilos @ilmari @kly @static "that/the video; didn't watch".

But I would prefer:

dv;dw (damn video)

wtfhtfav;dw (who the fuck has time for a video?)

fv;dw

@mirabilos @ilmari @kly @static I have to admit that there are a few topics where a video helps--mostly having to do with UI interaction in one sense or another. But I still don't want to watch them.

@marshall_0i @mirabilos @ilmari @kly Well, yes. Some things do need a video and in that case I'll go look a video. But not every thing needs a video.

@marshall_0i @ilmari @kly @static oooooh, me like!

I’ll put these into my acronyms database (with the next batch commit).

@kly have to be honest, I saw that and my first thought was “is that a Vim command string?” 🤪

@kly I will not watch your video.

I do not like them in a house.
I do not like them with a mouse.
I do not like them here or there.
I do not like them anywhere.

@kly I like that one. Other than YouTube views I don’t understand this whole “make everything a video” thing. Especially coding, where people have to pause the video to think, copy, whatever.

@arafel @kly

Video sells video ads.
Pivot to video was always about advertising. You're the product, not the customer.

@faduda @arafel @kly Also people [believe they] have more of a chance to get discovered through automatic #recommendation when posting a video essay to the #YouTube #silo than when posting a text article to a blog on their own website.

@arafel @kly making a ten-minute video is, sadly, one of the more effective ways to monetize your online stuff.

@billseitz @kly
proper podcasts have transcriptions published alongside them,
so you can tldr them as well

@kly video: too long didn’t watch
Seriously not interested in hearing your banter with viewers for a training video. Cut to the chase.

@kly you know, something that actually could transcribe videos whilst saving the important pictures (or video clips) would actually be a really excellent use of LLMs.

@kly
🥥 So glad someone came up with "v:dw = video: didn't watch," the shorthand I needed for one of my longtime pet peeves.
I now offer: "YT:dw = YouTube, didn't watch." 🥥

@jstatepost @kly too platform-specific (also, the colon ought to be a semicolon)

@mirabilos @kly
🥥 Thank YOU, Mirabilos; I needed to get that message from you in order to see it.
You are correct, of course. TKS. 🥥

@kly yeah, I hate learning things via video. Give me text instructions with pix any day…

@cordeliane @kly searchable! Also readable with just the text! Translatable!

@kly
I've lately started telling people that I won't get a chance to listen to their voice messages.
So the current list, expanding to "TV", as suggested by @ilmari:

TL; DR - too long; didn't read
TV; DW - too video; didn't watch
VM; DL - voice message; didn't listen

@richlv @kly @ilmari

also:

A;DC - Amazon, didn't click
S;DL; Spotify, didn't listen

@kly Yes! ⬆️ Also, pc;dl: “Podcast, didn’t listen.”

@timbray @kly "this video could have been a blog post"

@n3wjack @timbray @kly Folks love to rant about video but then why do most projects have such terrible documentation? People go to video for a reason.

@kly I'll definitely be using that one

@kly av;db (audiovisual content, didn't bother)

@kly my top three. rtfm, tl;dr v:dw. thx!

@kly just finding out what tl:dr stands for. I always thought it was something cooler than not reading a long thing

@kly@fosstodon.org where are you hanging out that you see this weirdness?

@kly @cstross need also one specific for Instagram, Fb, and Twitter links

@kly I propose pd:dl (podcast: didn’t listen)
