The main server for the Matrix community is Synapse which remains open source, and in 2024 alone has seen huge amounts of work contributed by Element to implement Matrix 2.0 - including instant sync, next-gen auth, a transformational improvement in encryption and support for native VoIP.
Synapse Pro is for nation-scale deployments, not community use.
Companies that contribute to Matrix have to earn money or there's no money to pay people who develop Matrix.

But to patch and/let features out of the Serversoftware ....
Example: Missing the group function from LDAP or OIDC (what an small company could need) or any internal messaging (fast Server or medium company).
