My favorite tree species, Pinus longaeva (Great Basin bristlecone pine). This tree could be 1,000-3,000yrs old. In California's White Mountains, at over 3,000 meters (10,000ft) elevation, a Pinus longaeva has been found to be over 5,000yrs old! The trees grow on light colored dolomite limestone, the remains of an ancient sea. Pinus longaeva wood is so hard it never rots, rather, it erodes.

In the center, and almost snake like tree trunk twists up towards the sky. At the upper third is a gnarl of short dead branches. Further up and bending right is a clump of growth indicating the gnarled tree is alive.

@Augur @RIDDLES Yes, one of my favorite places on Earth are the White Mountians. I should climb White Peak again before I leave the area.
