Europe has no position in "cloud" at all, but (government) initiatives abound to change this. In the post below I argue that AWS & friends are "IKEA clouds", attractive because they offer everything. And no one can compete with IKEA. I also argue that modern clouds are incredibly advanced (like airliners), and that you don't just replicate those either. Instead, Europe might might be better served by a narrower initial ambition:

@bert_hubert Just only the US reach of law should enough reason why European States should not be allowed to use cloud services from US based companies.

That would straight away excluse AWS, MS Azure, Google, etc.

Now to read the rest.

@bert_hubert Wirth was absolutely correct.

One of my sayings was that current software and website developers absolutely have no history in working on computers with 640kB RAM and 14k4 or less dialing-in Internet access.

@bert_hubert I've got all our e-mail and cloud storage with Strato and TransIP, also some with our ISP Freedom.
And for storage a lot of space on a few Synology NAS systems (Taiwan) locally.

@bert_hubert Great analysis, thanks for taking the time to write it. I hope I have the opportunity of sharing it around...

@bert_hubert @blogdiva Finding your way around AWS services in their console UI is much like attempting to navigate an IKEA store.

@ramsey @blogdiva the analogy works unreasonably well indeed :-)

@bert_hubert As a European working in an EU based team that owns the core of EC2, I halfway agree with the statements. The analogies are great. But "US based hyperscalers" are surprisingly global. That means dependency is mutual: Breaking ties would severely hurt both parties.

IMHO if you add great software design that is built for no operator access with EU operators, you get 99% of what a nationally built cloud could provide: aws.amazon.com/compliance/euro

Ah, yes… because that's the main issue. The local team. Not at all the the "being subject to US laws outside of the US" thing. Let's ignore that one, shall we.

PSA (also for others): my block-finger sits really loose for people working for and doing "advocacy" or "evangelize" for gafam shyte here and especially under a FOSS branding. Feel free to unfollow if you disagree. No I will not debate you.

@agraf @bert_hubert It would hurt AWS and possibly companies in the EU that are involved in AWS.
But, that would similar with any competition AWS might encounter.

@bert_hubert Ah, the Airbus and ASML comparisons resonated with me, I’ve been reading a lot lately to understand why they both became so successful looking for lessons and looking at the current EU digital policy through that lens.

@fj It is fascinating stuff, but there is also the "luck" factor. Both ASML and Airbus could've been massive failures if just a few decisions had gone the other way. But specifically ASML did some very smart things in terms of how they set themselves up.
