A few years ago, "we" (the Linux community) decided that X11 should be deprecated, so we started to build Wayland. From scratch - 1/4

Why? Why couldn't we just say "Yeah there's a lot of cruft in there, so let's take a blank slate and only pull in everything we want? Maybe rewrite some parts that's just complete garbage but has some significant value?" Why not do that?
I mean we're at least 10 years into the development of Wayland and still a lot of things are broken - 2/4

Want to know why I say this? Because when "we" (the Open Source people) discovered there was a significant bug in OpenSSL, some people from BSD forked it and did exactly what I just said to create LibreSSL and had a functional project in weeks!

Another thing I'd like to address is one of the biggest issues with systemd. That is its adoption by the community and its (literal) dependence on it - 3/4

It means that alternatives like OpenRC don't have to same opportunity to be tried by the community. And the same thing can be said about gcc, making it harder to get a pure Linux system (and to get rid of 's nuisances (mostly his insistence about GNU plus Linux)). That last thing might be solved by requiring "any C compiler", but that's probably too simple to "just work™" - 4/4

@RyuKurisu I agree about systemd completely, it's not really practical to try other init systems since so many things might depend on systemd's encroaching features, and that's a shame since it forces people to stay and use a system they might not feel in control of. I'm not sure I understand what your issue is about Stallman?

@Matter @RyuKurisu I ran Void using runit for a while, and I had zero issues related to the lack of systemd. The only issues I had were related to them using libreSSL instead of openSSL and some apps having hard-coded dependencies to openSSL and version numbers not lining up.
