Fascinating to see people talking up Bluesky in the Fediverse. Why? They're here. They've already escaped the world of implicitly corruptable corporate-owned for-profit shamelessly exploitative platforms... and yet they don't realise they've already succeeded at the hard part. Now they seem desperate to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. And drag the rest of us down into the mire with them.

@lightweight I’m over there because there are some climate/energy people who went there instead of here, but for the life of me I don’t know why anyone who’s on both platforms would prefer it there. It’s inferior in every way, it’s just lacking features.

@lightweight Actually, I can think of one way it’s better. The Bluesky UI is far nicer than Mastodon’s dated default UI. Thankfully there are loads of well-designed Mastodon apps that mean I rarely look at that interface. Like Mona!

But that’s it. All other features are inferior. I’m not counting quote posts because I don’t like quote posts ;)

@Brendanjones interesting. I've never looked at Bluesky (or Threads). I've got zero interest because both platforms are fundamentally flawed. I'm intrigued though to know what make you think Mastodon's default app is 'outdated'?

@lightweight It needs some work, yeah. I know it’s on their roadmap for their designer to look at this year.

Just on this page alone:
- inconsistent line weights
- sidebar icons not centred
- font awesome icons just aren’t very stylish
- the post date being underlined when it’s not a link
- the top menu bar does something funny when you scroll up
- why is there a sidebar at all?! This is one of the worst decisions I’ve seen in mobile web design.

@Brendanjones Interesting, thanks. I've never used the default mobile app. I mostly use it in the browser (default 'advanced' interface) or occasionally on Tusky on Android...

@lightweight Oh, that’s in Firefox (though it looks the same in all browsers). I think the app does look better, but I haven’t used it since I first signed up, because there were so many better options.
