I, for one, welcome our new #LLM overlords.

…well, within #reason 😅

#Copilot has been quite useful, despite the plentiful #hallucinations. 🤬

Before i've figured out, how to create a multi-page scan, as a PDF, using #XSane, … 😅

Yeah, using the #ImageMagick / convert tool, remains #persnickety 😅

pro tip; you need to match the DPI/resolution (close enough), in the input files, in order to produce a "good enough" output.pdf

yikes, the struggle is real 🖖 🤣 🍻

I just scanned a document using my GNU/Linux scanning software of choice: XSane.

When I started with GNU/Linux in 2000, I also used XSane.

I think it might be the same version: 0.999.

How software should work: No nonsense, options all laid out, does exactly what you tell it, no mistakes in 25 years. Even if it is clunky.

Worth a salute, I think.

#linux #xsane #scanning #canondrf120

Hello alltogether, I have a question concerning scanning with Linux (Manjaro Linux, scanning with xsane, Scanner Canon DR-F120).
1. Only document feed is working, flatbed gives the error "feed is empty".
2. (more important) When I perform a preview scan, everything is fine, but when scanning, the colors are false. Magenta turns green and things like that. You can read it, but it would be cool, if the colors were fine.
Canon has no support for Linux 😞

Is that a quidditch snitch in her hand?

This engraving was made to sell the borders in it, & appeared in a printer’s catalogue of 1917.

@davidrevoy @nekohayo Silly as it may sound, you'll almost always get best results by photographing the print in raw on a camera you trust. If you must scan them on a flatbed though, I'd recommend using the tried-n-true #xsane, as it gives you the ability to adjust the image during scan/preview in far greater detail than many other scanner programs. It also gives you the option to use ICM/ICC Profiles.

I own a CanoScan 8800F for scanning documents and film negatives.

Canon doesn't offer drivers/software for current versions of macOS anymore. On Linux, I used XSANE (fifi.org/doc/xsane/html/sane-x) and sometimes the scanning tool included with GNOME (apps.gnome.org/de/SimpleScan/, when I need a simpler UI, for sanity).

I'm currently looking into getting RAW output.
The search enginge optimized internet tells me, I should pay 100€ for a #VueScan license hamrick.com/vuescan/canon_8800 but I found out you can just install #Xsane on macOS with #brew formulae.brew.sh/formula/xsane so I might try that.

This will probably be a thread.

I guess at some point I should stop using #xsane for scanning. It's last new version was in 2014. It still works, but there are so many slightly annoying things about it that I know are never going to be fixed. changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelo

What's the state of #digitization software for #Linux now? Should I jump ship and pay for #Vuescan? This is mainly for monochrome photos and handwritten paper documents. #archiving #digitizing #kde
