Niall O'Callaghan<p>There's a fine line between allowing a bit of light to shine through and allowing everything through. <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/woodturning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodturning</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/turning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>turning</span></a></p>
Dave Polaschek (he/him)<p>A couple months ago, I finished this vase. Today, I finally got around to writing about it. There are things I don’t like about it, but there’s a lot I like and I learned a ton. Expect to see other things using these ideas at some point down the road. <a href="https://writing.exchange/tags/woodturning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodturning</span></a> <a href="https://writing.exchange/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a> <a href="https://writing.exchange/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a></p><p><a href="https://peekachello.art/bradford-pear-vase-with-halo-base" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">peekachello.art/bradford-pear-</span><span class="invisible">vase-with-halo-base</span></a></p>

Be Jay, Do Crimes<p>Still needs final shaping but the lid stays on, and considering that it’s my first lidded box AND a team effort, with the bulk of the turning done from a chunk of firewood by another guy working off my draft pattern, I’m calling it a win. Now to refine the process… <a class="hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23WoodTurning" target="_blank">#WoodTurning</a> <a class="hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23HistoricReproduction" target="_blank">#HistoricReproduction</a></p>
GamleBerrefjord<p>Today's conquest <br>– pondering the solution for the surface treatment on my new design for serving platters. The blank came from the old elm found in the rectory garden in Hjartdal back in 2021, this blank is from planks cut by my good friend Zacharias in Svartdal.<br>The inside of the serving dish is coated with food-safe beeswax oil. The rim is stained white, the underside is stained black, both transparent, both with silver embellishment. In a few days, these exterior surfaces will be polished with Microcrystalline wax.<br><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/woodturning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodturning</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/wood" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wood</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/craft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>craft</span></a></p>

markdennehyI was sure this piece wasn't going to survive drying because it had a crack on the rim - the whole chunk of log I turned it from was checked and cracked like crazy. But luckily, the wood dried so it ovaled in a way that compressed the crack, so I think it might have a chance to survive! <br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.ie/discover/tags/woodturning?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#woodturning</a>

Ed Wiebe<p>Three more bowls from hornbeam. Turning is mental therapy for me. There's a lot going on. Turning requires focus, critical thinking, creativity and imagination. In the end though, everything ends up round. </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Woodturning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Woodturning</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/VictoriaBC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VictoriaBC</span></a></p>
markdennehyWell that worked. Not bad for 75 quid. Hopefully those pieces survive, they're buried in boxes of their own shavings but it's still about 2 chances in 3 I think.<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.ie/discover/tags/woodturning?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#woodturning</a>
Ed Wiebe<p>Here are two bowls from <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/hornbeam" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hornbeam</span></a>. I got the wood when <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Saanich" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Saanich</span></a> cut a dozen trees because they were wrecking the sewer system on a street. </p><p>Hornbeam is a nice wood to turn, most of the time. It has a dense smooth grain. In these pieces though were knots with the growth happening at some contrary angle to the rest and I couldn't cut those parts smoothly. I did a lot of sanding there.</p><p>The wood is very pale when cut green. This wood has been stored for five years.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/VictoriaBC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VictoriaBC</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Woodturning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Woodturning</span></a></p>
Crimperman 🏳️‍🌈<p>When I made the henafafl[1] set as a gift and our fruit bowl [2] I had to be creative because I didn't have a lathe. I'm not complaining here: I love and am proud of how they both turned out and enjoyed making them. But I have now rectified this no-lathe situation.</p><p>My local Lidl (supermarket) was selling their Parkside lathes for £30. Now these aren't renowned for being excellent lathes and some questioned their value at even their original £80 price tag. I reckoned that at £30 I could afford to take the punt. I'll let you know how that turns out (no pun intended) 😀</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/woodworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodworking</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/maker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>maker</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/woodturning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>woodturning</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/lathe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lathe</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/parkside" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>parkside</span></a> </p><p>1. <a href="https://www.crimperman.org/building/hnefatafl/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">crimperman.org/building/hnefat</span><span class="invisible">afl/</span></a><br>2. <a href="https://www.crimperman.org/building/fruitbowl/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">crimperman.org/building/fruitb</span><span class="invisible">owl/</span></a></p>
