Despite firey distractions, unplanned moving of the junk pile, raking away a few loads of leaves and a broken angle grinder, the gate got finished today.

Which is good, because we don't need a bunch of deer messing up the freshly planted garden.

Apart from some fluxcore wire, no new parts on this gate whatsoever, everything is salvaged, including the fence, which I mended like a fisherman's wire net.

New (recycled) meadow gate fitting on its post, somewhat crooked but much better than the old, which is still leaning on the fence next to it. There is, almost invisible in this foto, a green wire fence installed in the pipe frame now. If you look even closer, you can see the fence had lots of breaks which have been carefully mended with old wire. On the ground rests a blue tool tote, a green welder, Mjölnir the post pounder and some old pots and buckets that were pulled from the trash pile. The steel trash pile has moved further out and where it was is now a freshly raked and wet patch of ground. The burnt leaves have gone to a less flammable neighbourhood.

Speaking of amateur welding - guess who focused on making a nice weld and forgot to pay any attention to where he was welding?

So I tack on the hinges, test fit the gate, hooray, it swings. Seam weld the first side, look down, oops, pile of dry oak leaves which is now on fire.

Sprint to the house, fetch extinguisher, put it out, wet all the nearby leaves in case of embers, rake up, etc.

[No tedious fire safety whinging please. I learnt from my mistake 😜]

Rusty fence post with newly tacked on gate hinges made from more rusty scrap metal. There are dried leaves all along the fence. The pile on the bottom of the fence post looks suspiciously black and scorched. A bunch of metal trash is mixed with more leaves on the side, which needed removing and wetting in case of embers.
Fire fighting equipment. A small 1kg powder extinguisher, three garden watering jugs full of water and an empty 5l plastic bottle.

Today I want to make a new gate, because the little pedestrian gate to the meadow was so crooked anything can just hop through it.

And because I can't drive my machinery through there, I'm making a wider gate. I found a half done gate in one of the steel junk piles and am extended it to the right size.

Problem with welding gates - nobody has a big enough table, so I have to improvise.

The previous guy makes my amateur welds look good 🤣

A lawn with junk and tools spread around. A section of fence is opened up in the background. In the foreground, a half finished gate with freshly extended legs is clamped to two sawhorses standing in the grass. On the floor is a small green fluxcore welder, a battery angle grinder and some other stuff. A wire brush is on the saw horse as well. The red farm jack rests in the background, having extracted the old gate post.
A typical "farm weld" from the previous folks, probably stick welded. Two pieces of galvanized steel tube joined at 90 degree. A big gap is between them, held together with some very rough weld blobs. A second hole is burnt into one of the pipes. It held together anyways and if it didn't, it was just blobbed again.
My weld, joining two pieces of galvanized steel pipe to extend them in length. It's not a great seam and unlikely to be watertight, but in comparison to the previous one it looks much better.

What's that, #Welding fume is being classified as a higher level carcinogen, and so I not only need a #PAPR respirator welding helmet, I need Local Exhaust Ventilation to suck up and filter the welding fume in the atmosphere?

OK, and how much is that machine.

~$7500 for one that doesn't use ($500+) consumable filters. *sigh* so that's THIS years's tax item.

Voici l'abeille à qui appartient les ailes ! Il me reste à peaufiner la peinture du corps. Il s'agit d'une sculpture de jardin. Je la vois voler tranquillement au milieu d'un bosquet fleuri. 😊

J'ai hâte de la mettre dans un vrai bosquet pour voir!

Sur la photo une abeille en acier composée de rebuts de métal. Son corps est fait d'une suspension automobile et ses ailes, des vis et autres rebuts. Son corps est peint en jaune à l'intérieur et en noir à l'extérieur.
Sur la photo la même abeille mais déposée dehors en avant de mon atelier. On voit derrière une cabane à bois à moitié remplie.

J'ai fini le petit corps de ma bête réfractaire. Je le voulais concentré juste avant de donner un coup de patte. Je le voulais dans une scène de son quotidien.

Je crois bien que je vais peindre l'intérieur en noir. Ça ne changera pas grand chose sur le look.

Dans ma bulle ! Il se nomme.

Sur la photo un chat en acier vu du côté droit. il s'apprête à donner un coup de patte gauche sur un papillon, aussi en acier qui vole devant ses yeux. Son corps n'est pas complètement couvert d'acier. Il est composé de morceaux laissant passer la lumière. Il fait 9" de haut sans la queue.
Le même chat mais vu du côté gauche. On voit sa patte prête à tapocher le papillon...

Found some pictures of the fixed thumb for this machine from another seller. The importer we bought it from doesn't bother with the fixed thumb and only has a €300 hydraulic thumb, which isn't in stock until autumn anyways.

Doesn't look complicated, need to dig through my steel treasure pile and see if I can find enough heavy plate to make one.

Our machine already has the mountings on the boom, although only one hole instead of three.

Close-up of a small excavator bucket with opposing thumb that is made from two curved steel plates joined by bolts and mounted low on the boom. A pipe acts as support and is braced against an attachment further up the boom. It's in the center hole of three, enabling some adjusting of the thumb angle.
Same thing, opposite side. There are pins secured against rotating, which is probably for the hydraulic version as in this setup they do not actually move. Here all three eyes for the support are visible.

Set up a new #Welding trolley for my #TIG / #PlasmaCutter unit. It's really difficult in Australia to find low-profile welding trolleys that handle a heavy machine (20+KG), AND have a long shelf for the unit itself. That's compounded by a design quirk on mine - the shield gas inlet is dead centre, which means the fittings align with the closest point of the gas bottle. The solution - #DIY standoffs for the bottle's cradle (until I can make something more engineered). Soon, more #Art #Sculpture.
