Andi Chorley<p>Softly Review by Scott Yanow</p><p>Dakota Staton has long been a fine jazz singer who is at her best on blues and standards. Usually her ballad renditions make for a fine contrast, but this out-of-print LP is a bit of a disappointment. Staton is backed by strings, flutes, French horns, a harp and a rhythm section arranged by Benny Carter...</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj8hRyHa2aE&amp;list=RDhj8hRyHa2aE&amp;start_radio=1" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=hj8hRyHa2a</span><span class="invisible">E&amp;list=RDhj8hRyHa2aE&amp;start_radio=1</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/DakotaStaton" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DakotaStaton</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/vocaljazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vocaljazz</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/standards" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>standards</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/bennycarter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bennycarter</span></a></p>

Andi Chorley<p>Mel Tormé at the Red Hill Review by John Bush</p><p>Mel Tormé's first recording for Atlantic is his best, a devastating swing set recorded at the Red Hill in Pennsauken, New Jersey. It's clear from just a few bars that the ever-ebullient scatter/singer is in his element here, swinging live at an intimate jazz club before a knowing audience; he treats onlookers to glorious versions of his live standards "Mountain Greenery" and "It's Delovely," extending the latter by several verses with updated, modern lyrics. Always conscious of featuring his musicians too, Tormé allows room for solos from pianist Jimmy Wisner, and even grabs the piano himself for three songs (including both of the above). </p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfH7xb6dPFU&amp;list=OLAK5uy_lf8m0Z675wD-42Qk4OgRhNHmyRYzKkqJs&amp;index=6" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=JfH7xb6dPF</span><span class="invisible">U&amp;list=OLAK5uy_lf8m0Z675wD-42Qk4OgRhNHmyRYzKkqJs&amp;index=6</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/MelTorm%C3%A9" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MelTormé</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/vocaljazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vocaljazz</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/swing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>swing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/coleporter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>coleporter</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/irvingberlin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>irvingberlin</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/standards" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>standards</span></a></p>
Andi Chorley<p>Playing the Field is the fifth album by American jazz vocalist Mark Murphy and his third for Capitol Records. It was recorded in 1960, when Murphy was 28 years old, and released by the Capitol Records label in the United States in 1960. The album is a collection of pop tunes and standards performed with a jazz band. </p><p>Buddy DeSylva's "Wishing (Will Make It So)" is from 1939's Love Affair co-starring Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne. "Put the Blame on Mame" is a song featured in the 1946 film noir Gilda in which Rita Hayworth lip synched to Anita Ellis' vocal recording. Apparently it was a Murphy favorite and he adds a few original lines. Murphy and Producer Tom Morgan thought it had potential to be a hit single but Capitol declined to release and promote it as a single. Murphy said, "By that time they had given up on me. They released the album and said Goodbye". - Wikipedia</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khvg1FzFbNQ&amp;list=OLAK5uy_mYrXL-hYileyCo82FPFUHWFEQakgC5Vcw&amp;index=1" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=khvg1FzFbN</span><span class="invisible">Q&amp;list=OLAK5uy_mYrXL-hYileyCo82FPFUHWFEQakgC5Vcw&amp;index=1</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/markmurphy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>markmurphy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/vocaljazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vocaljazz</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/gilda" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gilda</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/puttheblameonmame" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>puttheblameonmame</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/standards" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>standards</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/1960inmusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>1960inmusic</span></a></p>

Andi Chorley<p>Dakota Review by Eugene Chadbourne</p><p>Vocalist Dakota Staton rang in a new decade with a collaboration with one of the finest jazz arrangers, Benny Carter. What he has done here is something of a marvel, and it is a pity the record company saw fit to identify no one other than the stars of the show. What this really is all about, despite the vocalist of course having the front row in the happenings, is a kind of constant whirlwind of musical activity with many good-sounding jazz players throwing in comments. Carter shows great respect for the singer's audience by not serving up a watered-down dish of jazz. Once he sets up a solid rhythm basis, he creates many moments in the arrangements in which individual players improvise or different sections loosen up. Perhaps it is a muted trumpet, rapidly adding filigree behind the singer like lace on a skirt. On another track, unison trombones create fun musical action..</p><p><a href="https://www.allmusic.com/album/dakota-mw0000871727" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">allmusic.com/album/dakota-mw00</span><span class="invisible">00871727</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su8OezydG1o&amp;list=RDSu8OezydG1o&amp;start_radio=1" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=Su8OezydG1</span><span class="invisible">o&amp;list=RDSu8OezydG1o&amp;start_radio=1</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/DakotaStaton" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DakotaStaton</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/vocaljazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vocaljazz</span></a></p>

Andi Chorley<p>Broadway, Bongos and Mr. B is a 1961 studio album by the American singer Billy Eckstine. It was arranged by Hal Mooney, and marked Eckstine's return to Roulette Records.[2] The album features Latin tinged arrangements of popular Broadway show tunes, with a percussion section of xylophones, marimbas and bongos.[3]</p><p>In their July 1961 review of Broadway, Bongos and Mr. B, Billboard magazine wrote that "This is one of the best albums made by Billy Eckstine in many years", and that he was "singing with confidence again in his own style". The review concluded that it was "A strong new album that could help win back many of Mr. B's fans". - Wikipedia</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5urpt9mpPI&amp;list=PLFGwWCuP1d0hnoNT9QQ7rOuwnPAL1rE1S&amp;index=1" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=x5urpt9mpP</span><span class="invisible">I&amp;list=PLFGwWCuP1d0hnoNT9QQ7rOuwnPAL1rE1S&amp;index=1</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/billyeckstine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>billyeckstine</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/vocaljazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vocaljazz</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/showtunes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>showtunes</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/bongos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bongos</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/broadway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>broadway</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/1961inmusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>1961inmusic</span></a></p>
Andi Chorley<p>The Many Moods of Ann Richards is the 1960 solo album recorded by Ann Richards and her second release for Capitol Records (Capitol T-T-1406, stereo). The arrangers for the sessions are Ralph Carmichael, Bill Holman, and Tak Shindo.</p><p>Jason Ankeny writes in AllMusic, "The Many Moods of Ann Richards captures the singer in a series of different contexts and styles, precisely the kind of project that could amount to little more than a patchwork mess in the hands of a lesser talent. But arrangers Ralph Carmichael, Bill Holman, and Tak Shindo all prove sympathetic collaborators, spotlighting Richards' smoldering vocals in milieus that perfectly complement her lusty vibrato." The review praises the blend of Holman's jazz and Shindo's Eastern exotica influences with Richards demonstrating confident versatile performances with both. - Wikipedia</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Db3z85tC44o&amp;list=OLAK5uy_nFiX7QFZ8qCc0pPRjpV_6Zp7JUYbcLU2c&amp;index=1" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=Db3z85tC44</span><span class="invisible">o&amp;list=OLAK5uy_nFiX7QFZ8qCc0pPRjpV_6Zp7JUYbcLU2c&amp;index=1</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/annrichards" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>annrichards</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/stankenton" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>stankenton</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/billholman" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>billholman</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/takshindo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>takshindo</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/vocaljazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vocaljazz</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/1960inmusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>1960inmusic</span></a></p>
Andi Chorley<p>Crazy He Calls Me Review by Stephen Cook</p><p>Possessing a sprawling voice, Dakota Staton marked her Capitol heyday with sets taking in everything from torch ballads and Shearing-soft swing to bluesy sides and novelty numbers... what's really memorable about this and other late-'50s and early-'60s Capitol releases of hers is that Staton delivers top-quality interpretations with a dazzling and usually well-gauged array of vocal nuances. In this regard, Staton's debut, The Late, Late Show, is deservedly considered her best; but the equally impressive Crazy He Calls Me should not be missed. Featuring singular takes on the title track, "How Does It Feel?," and "The Party's Over" -- not to mention a fine and varied selection of charts by Nelson Riddle, Sid Feller, and Howard Biggs -- the album figures in with many other classic jazz vocals dates of the era.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKbq_UVxh9o&amp;list=RDYKbq_UVxh9o&amp;start_radio=1" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=YKbq_UVxh9</span><span class="invisible">o&amp;list=RDYKbq_UVxh9o&amp;start_radio=1</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/DakotaStaton" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DakotaStaton</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/vocaljazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vocaljazz</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/nelsonriddle" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nelsonriddle</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/sidfeller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sidfeller</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/jazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>jazz</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/1959inmusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>1959inmusic</span></a></p>
