David Castleton (Author)<p>In the churchyard of St George in the East, London, is a ruined redbrick building. This building used to be a mortuary and is where one of the Jack the Ripper victims, Elizabeth Stride, was brought and identified. One witness, a stallholder, said he had sold a man accompanying the victim grapes. Another witness claimed the victim was her sister and had been awoken on the night of the murder by a ghostly kiss on the cheek - a claim exploded at the inquest when her sister turned up and denounced the woman for giving her a bad name. The structure later served as a nature museum before being abandoned during World War II. St George in the East was designed by 'the Devil's Architect' Nicholas Hawksmoor. Excessively Diverting<p>Yay 5 p.m.! Tomorrow I work at one of my libraries, and we're also going to do a deep cleaning since we have guests next week. David Castleton (Author)<p>Stink pipes can be seen across London. Most were erected in the Victorian era to vent gases from the elaborate sewer network newly constructed by Joseph Bazalgette. They look a little like lampposts, but - of course - have no lamps and, if you tap them, they sound hollow. Some are plain and functional, but others have rich Victorian decorations like fluted columns, studded rings and carvings of roses. Excessively Diverting<p>With Austen, it's of two societal classes trying to make it work. The exception would be "Emma" and "Northanger Abbey." With the Brontës, , such as Jane, a governess to Rochester's niece (so definite class imbalance), and Heathcliff was a servant to Cathy.
