Sibling scientists and their dog hunt for #Oregon's hidden #truffle biodiversity phys.org/news/2025-02-sibling- paper: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10

"biology and ecology of Oregon #truffles are largely limited to research done in the mid-to-late 20th century—before #TruffleDogs were recognized in the US and before DNA sequencing was readily available... There's a lack of data on #fungi, as we're not taking care of them in the same way we take care of plants & animals"

Extinct #moa consumed colorful truffle-like #fungi in New Zealand phys.org/news/2025-01-dna-exti paper: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi

"In other places, #truffle spores are dispersed by #mammals such as squirrels. #NewZealand does not have such mammals; the #truffles there have traditionally relied on #birds to serve as a disperser. But because truffles grow underground, birds need to be large in order to dig them up—moa would have made perfect dispersers"

We had a lovely evening with friends last night and brought dessert. I knew there were some limitations due to allergies, so in the thinking process I chose to go with super simple truffles/mini torte balls. And then @WTL suggested the seasonal favourite homemade Belgian waffles.

The plated dessert with freshly puréed mango and persimmons and fresh blackberries from our @oddbunchcanada box; the homemade Belgian Waffles and the Sweet Potato Truffle/Torte, topped with some coconut whipped topping provided by our hosts!

@richrollgardener That is very interesting, Richard.
I tried to pull a 90l container with my own compost from pH 7.0 to 8.0 using kilos of ground eggshells (as that is what we have).
The aim was to plant a hazel inoculated with truffle fungi. It didn't work. The buffering capacity of the compost was too high. It stayed flat at 7.0 and I didn't bother to get an expensive bush. Maybe I should source some lime instead and restart the experiment. Thanks!

Evidence for adaptation of colourful truffle-like fungi for #birds in #Aotearoa-#NewZealand: Amy Brunton-Martin et al. nature.com/articles/s41598-024

"Most fungi need only wind or water to disperse their spores. But #truffles need a little help from #animals... They use scent to attract #mammals... But Aotearoa had no native land mammals to disperse truffles."
