1. #TRIfA and the #TOX protocol. TRIfA is an instant messaging app, it supports video and file transfer, and is cross-platform. What I like the most about it though, is it's network philosophy of being completely peer-to-peer and decentralised, something I think my fellow :fediverse: folks will get. :goose_hacker:
It is built upon a common protocol TOX which encourages a diversity of developers to build different apps. There are limitations, but like with most open-source projects they are open about these.
I have also used #qTox on my desktop to keep in-touch with my family. So thanks to all the developers of these apps, especially Zoff, who appears to be the main developer of TRIfA

A similar project is #Jami

My problem with #Jami is that it has a centralized user directory that no matter what people tell you, you can’t opt out of

Tox used to have problems with calls but text messaging worked alright

I ran some tests three weeks ago, video chats work fine if you’re using #TRiFA or #TRiFA-adjacent clients

Really the main problem with P2P messaging seems to be persistence. Both the sender and the receiver have to be online at the same time for the message to be transmitted. That is never going to work reliably without a dense network of many nodes willing to hold the message, and possibly a way of determining which nodes are trustworthy to do so.

I think this can work if the app just keeps trying to send the message until it gets delivered. But it’s not a perfect solution by any means
