Mika<p>So hyped for this - but I'm still <b>patiently</b> waiting for trackpads to have better support on <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/KDE" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KDE</a>, particularly the need for customising gestures cos the defaults on <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Wayland" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Wayland</a> are just... not good enough. I'm still relying on my <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Touche" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Touche</a>/<a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Touchegg" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Touchegg</a> config to fix this, and fortunately it somehow still works despite being an <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/X11" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#X11</a><span> only solution.<br><br>RE: </span><a href="https://floss.social/users/kde/statuses/113985000047425897" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://floss.social/users/kde/statuses/113985000047425897</a></p>
Mika<p>OK nvm on that first point regarding the touchpad/trackpad gestures on <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Wayland" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Wayland</a>/<a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/KDEPlasma" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KDEPlasma</a> 6 - the very <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/macOS" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#macOS</a> like gestures were still just thanks to my <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/touche" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#touche</a>/<a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/touchegg" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#touchegg</a> config I made when I used <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/X11" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#X11</a><span> lol so yea, don't really know yet what's nice/different with using the touchpad with Wayland vs X11.<br><br>RE: </span><a href="https://sakurajima.social/notes/9x003d59dz" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://sakurajima.social/notes/9x003d59dz</a></p>
Mika<p><span>On the note of not-immediately-obvious benefits I've noticed since making the switch to Wayland:<br><br>- My Magic Trackpad works great right out of the box - I </span><b>think</b> this is bcos of Wayland, including the 3-swipe up gesture to launch Overview and 3-swipe down on an app to open "Expose"-like view a la macOS (UPDATE: It's not, apparently the OOTB experience/gestures is awful, and mine's great thanks to Touchegg which I've already been using on X11). Pinch to zoom was an obvious new addition though which is nice. They worked fine and similar to when I was on X11 though with help using something like <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Touchegg" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Touchegg</a><span> to configure my gestures. I'm not seeing "1:1" gestures though that I've been hearing so much about - I wonder what that's all about... I thought it'd be like macOS but maybe I had the wrong expectation.<br><br>- Previously on X11/Plasma 5, I'm not too sure what's the cause or what triggers it, but I often get this particular issue when (I </span><b>suspect</b>) I use too much memory over time - I often could repro it when I open too many tabs too long on Firefox, where I'd then get a bug where windows of all kinds including context menus, app windows, notifications, hint messages, etc. appearing completely black. The fix was then to just restart and as long as I don't use Firefox like a maniac for too long, this issue never occurs. I think I remember seeing people say that it happens when too many pop-ups appear in short periods of time such as notifications or any sort of file-manager dialogs, etc. On Wayland, it doesn't seem to happen at all anymore - even when I'm using something crazy like 28GB out of 32GB of memory. That's <b>really</b> nice.</p>

❌ Ditto<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@shbhmnk" class="u-url mention">@<span>shbhmnk</span></a></span> agreed - you don&#39;t need <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/touchegg" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>touchegg</span></a> on <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>wayland</span></a> . However, I ran into other issues when running <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/plasma" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>plasma</span></a> on wayland - I don&#39;t recollect them right now since I probably last tried around a month back. Looking forward to trying when <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/kde" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>kde</span></a> announces wayland support more officially again. For now, touchegg does do a great job!</p>
❌ Ditto<p>I&#39;ve settled down a bit after an initial <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/distrohopping" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>distrohopping</span></a> adventure ever since <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ubuntu" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ubuntu</span></a> starting worrying me. Here&#39;s what I&#39;ve settled down on now, after experimenting with different setups:</p><p>1. <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/opensuse" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>opensuse</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/tumbleweed" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>tumbleweed</span></a> and <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>nixos</span></a> on my primary and experimental laptops<br />2. <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/chezmoi" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>chezmoi</span></a> to synchronize dotfiles<br />3. <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nix" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>nix</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/packagemanager" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>packagemanager</span></a> to manage command line utilities across distros with <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/homemanager" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>homemanager</span></a> <br />4.i. <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/kdeplasma" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>kdeplasma</span></a> + <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/lattedock" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>lattedock</span></a> + <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/touchegg" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>touchegg</span></a> preferred on <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/opensuse" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>opensuse</span></a><br />4.ii. <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/i3wm" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>i3wm</span></a> on <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>nixos</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/i3" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>i3</span></a> is very cool....</p>
Ercanbrack<p>The second is a curated list of desktop environments (DEs) with the best touchscreen support. I’m not as worried about this one, because the wonderful <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/touchegg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>touchegg</span></a> program exists. But built in support is nice.</p><p><a href="https://www.maketecheasier.com/best-linux-desktop-touch-enabled-monitor/?amp" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">maketecheasier.com/best-linux-</span><span class="invisible">desktop-touch-enabled-monitor/?amp</span></a></p>
Ercanbrack<p><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/linuxtablet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linuxtablet</span></a> Through all of this, I've been trying to stick to Gnome, because I like it for the most part. Is it perfect? No! I wish the keyboard allowed for terminal commands and function keys and such, rather than a basic character set. But over all, I've liked the look and feel of it, and haven't tried too much else. However, most of the bugs I'm dealing with revolve around GTK and Gnome. It has me thinking... It's not the ONLY way. There are DEs and there is <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/touchegg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>touchegg</span></a>. There is KDE Plasma.</p>
