Arlo Godfrey<p>Even as I remain stationary, I can still play a role in illuminating the path forward for those who will come after me.</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ai</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>No matter how hard you look, the world is more interesting than you can see.</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>Have more confidence in yourself than in your tools.</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>How you act shows who you are, how you learn shows who you want to be.</p><p>Say who you want to be, then be who you say you are.</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>Arts and engineering are often complementary, but when you lean towards arts (even just app design) the product of your work tends towards being more transient.</p><p>Code can run the same way forever, but human interaction is never the same twice. </p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>The phrase &quot;food for thought&quot; is a curious one, especially in an age where everyone is so overloaded with information that they&#39;re seemingly unable to digest it. </p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>You&#39;d be crazy to be sane in this world.</p><p>The world is too crazy for that.</p><p>But maybe in a roundabout way, the craziest response is to be sane purely out of spite.</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>A question occurs that doesn&#39;t seem to have a name.</p><p>What is the shortest tape you could feed a Turing machine to seed it with consciousness?</p><p>What is the &quot;Turing Seed&quot;?</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ai</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>I&#39;m still quietly waiting for the world to realize that writing AI-controlled code is a text-only version of building app UX, but facing an AI instead of a User.</p><p>From simple DVD menus to complex IDEs, the UX principles of affordances, signifiers, discoverability, mistake proofing, etc., all still apply.</p><p>Everything else is just the facilitating infrastructure.</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ai</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a></p>

Arlo Godfrey<p>What if we didn&#39;t have to translate ideas into words to transmit them?</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>The concept of the library [of Babel] is also overtly analogous to the view of the universe as a sphere having its center everywhere and its circumference nowhere. </p><p><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Library_of_Babel" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Libr</span><span class="invisible">ary_of_Babel</span></a></p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>The difference between survival and extinction won&#39;t be technology, and it won&#39;t be individual genius. </p><p>It will be collaboration at a scale we’ve never seen before.</p><p>It will be knowledge, structured in a way that lets intelligence thrive—human or otherwise.</p><p>It will be people like us, building what makes collective intelligence possible.</p><p>We don&#39;t need a hero.<br />We need a blueprint.</p><p>&quot;We still have a long way to go, and I cannot go without you.&quot;</p><p>8/8</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ai</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>If we don’t get this right, something else will. Whether it&#39;s the birds, the dolphins or the dogs. </p><p>Life will find a way even if humanity doesn&#39;t.</p><p>7/x</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ai</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>The best (worst?) part? Think about it hard for a second.</p><p>We&#39;re the FIRST intelligent species to evolve. The first draft is ALWAYS flawed.</p><p>Being the first, the chances of self-destruction are the highest, but even if we blow ourselves up life will continue forcing other life to get smarter to survive.</p><p>Even still, if other species are to eventually become sapient from our own environmental pressures, don&#39;t we have a duty of care?<br />6/x</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>Fight and flight aren&#39;t everything-- there&#39;s a third path, and it&#39;s the one humans took. </p><p>Get clever.</p><p>We learned.<br />We abstracted.<br />We built systems that let us operate at scales beyond our individual survival needs.</p><p>But now, we’re forcing intelligence to emerge in places where it would not have existed—and we barely understand what we’re doing.</p><p>5/x</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ai</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>There was something I saw a few years ago where they were trying to capture whale communication so they could decipher it, and they accidentally played back an orca&#39;s own call to itself through the loudspeaker.</p><p>Instead of responding with sound, it attacked the boat.</p><p>Maybe creatures already have a sort of uncanny valley. Or maybe this orca was just smart enough to know it was hearing its own voice.</p><p>I think we underestimate the sapience of other sentient animals. </p><p>4/x </p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>And if that’s true, then it happens FAST, and it may not be just humans on this trajectory—it’s anything intelligent enough to be forced into higher-order cognition by environmental pressure.</p><p>That should scare us.<br />But it should also push us to prepare for what comes next.</p><p>If we barely tolerate our own intra-species intelligence, what happens when another species reaches the tipping point?</p><p>3/x</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ai</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>The bicameral mind hypothesis posits that about 3,000 years ago (around the time of the ancient Greeks), our cognitive functions were divided between one part of the brain that appears to be &quot;speaking&quot; and a second part that listens and obeys, and that the breakdown of this division gave rise to consciousness in humans.</p><p>2/x</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ai</span></a></p>
Arlo Godfrey<p>We’re not the main character. We’re too early to be the progenitors of intelligence on a cosmic scale, and too late to be the ones who define its final form.</p><p>We’re in the adolescence of cognition—barely past the phase where we stopped listening to voices in our heads and started realizing we were the voices all along.</p><p>And the scary part?<br />We don’t even fully understand what changed.</p><p>1/8</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/thoughtstopassthetime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>thoughtstopassthetime</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ai</span></a></p>
