Screenphiles<p>I like 'The Manitou' (1978) despite the fact that it's a fairly flawed movie. There are some really interesting ideas and concepts on display but the movie never really deals with any depth what those ideas are.</p><p>Which is a pity because the focus on Native American mysticism is an interesting one and not something you see all that often.</p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/ofs8QCaoMOI" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/ofs8QCaoMOI</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/themanitou" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>themanitou</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/genre" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genre</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/nativeamerican" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nativeamerican</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/horror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>horror</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/review" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>review</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/commentary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>commentary</span></a></p>
Screenphiles<p>I just rewatched 'The Manitou' (1978), which was better in my memories than actuality. </p><p>Based on Graham Masterson's book, at least he took the subject matter seriously.</p><p>The movie? Not so much. It's got some great ideas though little atmosphere and despite exploring some really interesting ideas comes off more campy than scary.</p><p>And casting Michael Ansara as a Native American – he was born in Syria – wouldn't go over too well these days. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/genre" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genre</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/horror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>horror</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/themanitou" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>themanitou</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/michaelansara" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>michaelansara</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/movies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>movies</span></a></p>
