#Clouds will slowly increase across the #Northland Wednesday night, along with some patchy #fog, as #winds remain very light and lows in the 30s.

A light east wind will keep high #temperatures in the 40s and 50s. We remain #dry through most of the day, but a #storm system to our south will bring back #shower chances by the evening.

Any remaining #showers from earlier today are moving out of the region.

The #sunshine and southwest #breeze is helping to push most #temperatures to the 50s and 60s for highs.

The satellite and radar over the Northland at 1:30 p.m. on April 23, 2025, shows light rain showers over parts of the Upper Peninsula, moving to the northeast. Cloud cover persist over the Rain River Basin, with scattered clouds over northwest Wisconsin. The rest of the region is seeing mostly clear skies.

Temperatures in the Northland just after 1 p.m. on April 23, 2025, range from 42 to 66 degrees Fahrenheit. The coolest readings are in the Rainy River Basin and along the North Shore.

When compared to 1:30 p.m. of April 22, 2025, temperatures in the Northland for the early afternoon of April 23 are mostly warmer than 24 hours ago by 2 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. International Falls is the exception, cooler by 5 degrees.

Wind speeds in the Northland just after 1 p.m. on April 23, 2025, range from 5 to 23 mph. Wind direction is primarily from the southwest and south. A shift to the west and northwest is being observed in the Rainy River Basin.

Mass #CoralBleaching has frequently coincided w/episodes of #ElNiño, a global #climate pattern that usually increases #temperatures. That was the case in 1998, 2016 & again last year, which was the warmest year on record.
#Oceans have been steadily absorbing rising temperatures for years, but in 2023 & 2024, temps broke records w/spikes that alarmed scientists. #Seas are also becoming more acidic as they warm, which can dissolve corals’ skeletons & make it harder for them to grow.

“Bleaching becomes more severe if either the #heat stress episodes are more intense or if they last for a longer time,” Joerg Wiedenmann, a marine biologist who heads the #CoralReef Lab at the University of Southampton in England, said…. The #Earth’s rising #temperatures have caused bleaching events to occur more often & last longer, he said. The changing & mixing of #ocean currents can also influence regional water temperatures, he added, further increasing the risk of bleaching.

Bleaching occurs when #heat upends the #coral’s metabolism, causing it to turn white as it expels the symbiotic algae that provide it with nutrients & color. Bleaching doesn’t mean the coral has died, but prolonged bleaching — which scientists say is made more frequent & severe by rising #sea #temperatures — can kill it.
