Linear Tape Open (LTO) AKA Ultrium is a fascinating tape technology. The drive itself seems stupidly simple but seems to have incorporated all the lessons learned from decades of tape drive design and usage.

I've got one last retro computer post from the archives: when I got my Commodore 64 back in March 1989, I had only a tape drive - the 1530 Datasette -- in the first couple of weeks. It was so cumbersome and slow that it was soon followed by the 1541-II floppy drive. But I've still got the Datasette and a few tapes! Does anyone remember those games?

Anyone else here a fan of #tapedrive ? For me it's by far the cheapest way to store just about anything... I can still find new LTO-3 tapes (400-800 GB) on ebay for under 10 EUR and I only payed 50 EUR for this old HP drive :-) I wrote a few scripts to do regular automated backups of our server that are also logged and reported in emails
