Joe Chou<p>MOSAIC announcement! <a class="hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23aviation" target="_blank">#aviation</a> <a class="hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a><br><br><a href="https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/us-transportation-secretary-sean-p-duffy-announces-improvements-recreational-aviation" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">faa.gov/newsroom/us-tr...</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>Drove to a local airfield which has a well-regarded breakfast / lunch restaurant. The French toast was out of this world. Have done touch-and-goes there and used it for a XC checkpoint, but never “been” there. Someday I hope to spend $400 to fly there to get the same food. <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>Hopefully good news soon! <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23avgeek" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#avgeek</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23aviation" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#aviation</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a><br><br><a href="https://generalaviationnews.com/2025/04/03/mosaic-final-rule-expected-by-august/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">MOSAIC final rule expected by ...</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>I need this. Need to figure out how to source specific <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23LEGO" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LEGO</a> parts. This version <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HUC12ISVOg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HUC...</a> includes a parts list, but not all numbers match at LEGO Pick A Brick. Another version also looks good: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HUC12ISVOg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HUC...</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a><br><br><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6gt70nlMFo" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">How to build a LEGO Cessna 172</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>Solo long cross-country finally done! Air was a bit rough below 3000 feet especially for this <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a>, but the sky was clear enough to see checkpoints from WAY far away. Just a beautiful but bumpy day. As always, I could have flown better, but it's done!</p>
Joe Chou<p>Evolution of converting data into <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a> understanding: Short-field takeoff POH performance tables --&gt; <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23dataviz" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#dataviz</a> plots of the tables --&gt; interactive <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23rstats" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#rstats</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23Shiny" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Shiny</a> App for "What if?" analysis Also fetches weather and runway info (Needs runway refactor for small fields with no weather)</p>
Joe Chou<p>The weather still hates me. Green is visual flight rules (VFR); blue is marginal VFR. I'm in the Northeast. Fun to compare SkyVector (limited # of reporting sites) vs. full data download from Aviation Weather Center and personal R script (previously described). <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23datavis" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#datavis</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>The reason I will never get my private pilot certificate is because of the exponentially decreasing probability of simultaneously fulfilling: - 3 airfields with <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a> solo weather minimums - my availability - plane availability p1•p2•p3•p4•p5 = essentially infinitesimal No long XC again.</p>
Joe Chou<p>Any word on why prog charts at AWC have been inaccessible since yesterday? <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23avgeek" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#avgeek</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23aviation" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#aviation</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>Decreased Weather Forecast Office staffing and loss of 2 radiosonde reporting locations in CONUS (Omaha, NE and Rapid City, SD) for winds / temperatures aloft analysis. Guess I'll have to update my analysis (<a href="https://www.incidentalfindings.org/posts/2024-10-07_winds_aloft_stations/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">www.incidentalfindings.org/posts/2024-1...</a>). <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23rstats" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#rstats</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23dataviz" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#dataviz</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23weather" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#weather</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>Had to cancel student solo long XC for weather at one airport (the weather hates me) so went to practice area instead. But for the first time, my 360° steep turns ran into my own wake (3 out of 4 times)! (Landings were slightly less terrible, too.) Small victories for a <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a>.</p>
Joe Chou<p>Good news — figured out how to import a Google Earth map layer outlining the practice area into ForeFlight. Bad news — very clear that my last flight wandered a bit out of bounds. Did not violate any airspace, but it’s really inconvenient that air doesn’t have markings. <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>Just picked a fight in r/flying. Someone reporting errors in their fleet’s w+b sheet. Discussion struck me as pretty pointless. Did math. The max error was equivalent to 1 lb error for backseat. Hope passenger didn’t 💩 without telling because that’s the magnitude of error. <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23avgeek" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#avgeek</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>Flew for the first time in 2.5 weeks yesterday and solo for the first time since late December. I didn’t do very well at all. So disheartening. How do you watch and react (and not OVERreact) to everything at the same time? <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>Have modeled EVERY major performance calculation for this C172S. Can fetch METAR to autopopulate elev, baro, and temp. Handles PAlt, DAlt, headwinds. Calculates climb from field elev to goal altitude. Need good weather for <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a> solo long XC. Just wish I flew better. <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23avgeek" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#avgeek</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23rstats" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#rstats</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23shiny" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#shiny</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>I made a <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23shiny" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#shiny</a> app to do my C172S cruise performance calculations. I know apps out there already do this, but creating my own ensures I understand it fully. Thinking of adding takeoff and landing performance. Will make it easy to do the calcs every time. <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23rstats" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#rstats</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23datavis" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#datavis</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>Visualized cruise performance tables with plots for better intuition of how the numbers relate. The line plot uses numbers directly from the POH tables. The heat map is visualization of a calculated metric of nautical miles per gallon. Just being a <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23avgeek" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#avgeek</a> with <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23rstats" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#rstats</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23datavis" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#datavis</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>The remedy for get-there-itis is sound aeronautical decision making. What a role model for this <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a>. Hopefully I will remember this incident someday when making a questionable go / no go decision.<br><br>RE: <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:ojwszrpcvhwuhl4nhwactd2y/post/3lj6jjyai3s2a" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:ojwszrpcvhwuhl4nhwactd2y/post/3lj6jjyai3s2a</a></p>
Joe Chou<p>First flight in 3 weeks as a <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23studentpilot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#studentpilot</a>. Winds were friendly; wasso great to be in the air again. Unusual attitude recovery is FUN. Also had first attempts at short field landings -- one each good / barely 20-feet short / floated long. Have to work on that energy management.</p>
