An older video by JillianEve - I just love how she combines telling so expertly about fibercrafts of all kind. And adding that bit of social critique (or however I should call it)

The Most Important Tool in Human History & Why No One Knows About It (ft. misogyny)

Heyyyy mastodon!

It’s time for a snapshot #introduction of me, and how I'm hoping to contribute to this platform

My name is Cassie and I run a Philadelphia based community craft and art group. The group started 9 years ago on another well known platform and over the years it stopped serving our purposes. My hope is that this space can help connect our local community and inspire others to follow suit.

I prefer she/her and they/them pronouns and I default to using they/them pronouns with new people that don’t specify a preference.

I'm an #artist, #crafter, #organizer, and #designer. In order of most experienced to least, I utilize and teach the following skills: #leatherwork #accessorydesign #handembroidery #chainstitchembroidery #basketweaving #handbuildingclay #bookmaking #printing #surfacedesign #naturaldyeing #felting #spinningyarn #painting #drawing

I like to create, I have a love of aquatic fish, mushrooms, bugs, bones, prismatic colors, texture, line work, anything tufted, and gin is the way to my heart.

I look forward to sharing my creations and offering support with questions about any skillsets that I am able!

🇩🇪 Kann mir jemand sagen, wie man sein Spinnrad ölt / fettet? Besonders das Plastikteil unter dem Lederriemen, wo das Garn eingezogen wird, damit es sich leichter dreht?
Was nimmt man da als Gleitmittel?

🇬🇧 Can someone tell me how to oil my spinning wheel? Especially the plastic part of the flyer below the leather strap where the yarn goes in. So that it turns more easily?
What should I use for lube?

Repaired my favorite handspun fingerless mitts. 🥰
I made them 15 years ago from a „trash batt“ I carded, throwing in everything I had lying around. Merino, white and brown alpaca, some pink mystery fiber, silk, cotton. I plied it with some leftover blue-green merino silk, and knit fingerless mitts from it.
They are so ugly 🫣, but they are warm and cozy and have been in use every winter since I made them.
I wore them through at the thumb bind-off, or maybe moths got into them over the summer, I don’t know.

I unpicked the bind-off, tinked a round to get a long enough yarn tail, joined in two strands of different handspun, re-knit the round and bound off. As good as new 😊

As repair yarn, I used leftovers of the original blue-green merino silk ply, and a pink-purple-ish merino.

Time togo to bed I think. Can stacking plate (custome FreeCAD design that on it's own will hold 3 cans for the bottom of a stack of 6, or with some creativity can go between a bottom row of 4 against a wall for a stack of 10) currently on the printer. That's got another 4 hours left to go. Then a 11 hour print of a 3 spool Lazy Kate design that I may end up turning into a SVC to laser cut for people who have those. Current design is for 5 mm stock, but aimed at a 3d Printer.#SpinningYarn

OK, this is an absolute first for me. There is always, always, one last spool with 40-80 yds left on it. This time, it was 2 4 oz balls, spun over 4 spools (Clemes and Clemes spools are on the small size). By the time I got through all 4 spools, only about 6" difference! And for those following at home: yes, dear Ms. S is functioning just fine, the problem was (new) user error. #spinning #SpinningYarn #handspun @spinning @spinningyarn
