sgt1372<p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/SF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SF</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/shoppingmalls" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>shoppingmalls</span></a> </p><p>Here's an article that should be interesting to any San Franciscan (native or otherwise) about the divergent fortunes of the Westfield Center & Stonestown.</p><p>As an OLD native San Franciscan, I remember the Emporium (upon which the Westfield Center was anchored & based) which during Xmas was a special destination with kids rides on the roof & a special toy section the floor below along w/Santa Claus. </p><p>The glassed circular domed ceiling in the center of the showroom floor was & still is (if they haven't demolished it yet) a show stopper right up there with the Garden Court at the Palace Hotel as one of the most iconic locations in San Francisco. </p><p>Then, again, I remember Stonetown when it was an open air, single story mall in the 1960's when I went to Lowell. Like many U.S. shopping malls, it was once a sprawling mass of indoor chain stores and the place where teens and adults would hang out. Now it has many empty shops. <br>

Like many American malls, about half of the mall building has been demolished, and expensive "yuppie" apartment buildings have been built in that former section of the mall, with very little green space. <br>

The city has worked hard to keep up and revitalize the remaining section of the mall. This large <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/mural?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#mural</a> portrays the icon of this part of <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Illinois?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Illinois</a> , called the <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/FoxValley?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#FoxValley</a>. <br>

The artist here has done an excellent job of designing the image so that it blends with its surroundings and looks like it's coming out of the raised garden bed in front of it. The swashes of blue are symbolic imagery of the Fox River. And the repeated pattern on the nearby backdropped wall to the left of the painting is also a series of foxes. <br>
