It's interesting how this franchise goes back and forth between whether artificial life is "alive". I can't imagine Star Fleet actually being incompetent enough to accidentally created life with the emergency holograms or holodeck characters (advanced chatbots), but the idea of where that line is between a simulation and "life" is not really addressed, other than as a sort of Turing Test from the crew, and we the audience.
