Torbjörn Andersson<p>20. You can't tell from a still image, of course, but in the DOS version the lights on Meathook's sign are animated. In the Sega CD version, they are not. And even thought the sign has about twice as many lights in the Sega version (because they're all visible at once, not blinking on and off), it just looks less festive.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>19. This, on the other hand, is just a bug in the Sega CD version. There's supposed to be three conversation options here when talking to the Men of Low Moral Fiber... and there is. You can select them. It's just that two of them are drawn outside the screen. Where it was supposed to add eight pixels, it added eight rows.</p><p>Well, the next major version of ScummVM will have the option to fix that.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>18. Maybe it's the colors, but the wrinkle in the rug seems to be either gone, or at least a lot less pronounced. And is that an extra sword in the cabinet?</p><p>Or maybe I'm just reaching.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>18. In the wide shots, you can clearly see the smoke from Smirk's cigar, but in the close-up it's gone. If you're playing a CD version, that is. In the DOS floppy version it's still there.</p><p>The smoke is also missing in the Special Edition.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>

Torbjörn Andersson<p>17. In most cases, I can understand the changes that were made to the Sega CD version of the game. This is not one of those changes. When talking to the troll, Guybrush can make a number of suggestions of objects that he's willing to offer as toll. All options involving money have been removed.</p><p>The option to (unsuccessfully) threaten your way past him is also gone, but I guess that's slightly more understandable?</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>16. Guybrush Threepwood can hold his breath for 10 minutes, and the only way to die in The Secret of Monkey Island is to drown. Everybody knows that.</p><p>Unless all you've played is the Sega CD version where, when your 10 minutes are up, the game just automatically solves the puzzle for you.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>15. Another example of the Sega CD version removing some graphics, presumably for performance reasons. The chandelier and the ship in a bottle are both gone.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>14. One change in the DOS CD version of The Secret of Monkey Island that I don't understand how it ever made it into the final version: The sign about the sleeping dogs got so much harder to read. I'm guessing it was caused by palette changes introduced by the new GUI.</p><p>The Sega CD version fixes that, so that's another point in its favor.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>12. Another example of the Sega CD version making things a bit easier to read: The sign at the Mêlée Island treasure.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>11. Speaking of the forest, even the treasure map uses the bolder font. Maybe it's the only font, but they still had to make some adjustments for it to look right so nice attention to detail, I guess.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>10. Being a CD version, of course the Sega version drops the infamous "stump joke". I can understand why it doesn't make sense for a CD version to ask you to insert increasingly ridiculous non-existing floppies. But I still maintain that it makes the stump joke reference in Monkey Island 2 a lot more confusing than the stump joke itself ever was.</p><p>Then again, MI2 was never released for the Sega CD, so in this - and only this - one case I can forgive it.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>9. (Addendum.) Though even in the Sega version, conversation options can use more than one line of text. I guess they just didn't want to split messages that used to fit on one line into two lines.</p><p>Another thing about this scene that's hard to illustrate is that the clock tower behaves like in the DOS CD version, i.e. the description changes each time you look at it. In earlier version, you had to leave the room and come back for the description to change.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>8. Another consequence of the font change is that a lot of conversation options have been shortened to fit. In this case, "My name is Guybrush Threepwood and I'm a mighty pirate." becomes "I'm the mighty pirate Guybrush Threepwood."</p><p>We can also see that the palette changes between the VGA floppy / CD versions have carried over to the Sega version. Perhaps a result of the new GUI but that's still another strike against the "it's the Amiga graphics" theory.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>7. The Sega CD version draws conversation texts in a bold font. Probably to make it easier to read on a TV screen. But for some reason, they also dropped the gag where the text is printed upside down after Guybrush is shot from the cannon.</p><p>They still print it mirrored, but what sense does that make?</p><p>Also, am I the only one who think it was a mistake to change the text color from the DOS floppy to the DOS CD version? I find the latter much harder to read.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>6. The SCUMM Bar kitchen makes me think of one of those "spot 5 differences" puzzles. The whole room looks darker in the Sega version, with shadows in the corner by the stove. The pot under the workbench is hard to see. This is like in Amiga screenshots I've seen, but the hunk of meat is the redrawn version from the DOS CD version.</p><p>When I started playing, I assumed the graphics were simply based on the Amiga version but I guess it's not that simple!</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>5. Inside the SCUMM Bar. Unlike the DOS version, the Sega CD version does not have a pirate spinning on the chandelier. I believe other versions can do this too, if they detect that they're running on a slow computer.</p><p>Less noticeably, Mancomb (the red-coated pirate) is sitting on a chair in the Sega version, not floating in mid-air. I guess the glitch was introduced in the VGA version, then fixed in versions based on it? (Except for the Special Edition.)</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>4. Once you get to the SCUMM Bar, the sign is significantly brighter in the Sega CD version. Actually I wish the DOS version had been more like that. The first time I played it, I had a monitor that was quite dark and I just walked by the bar without noticing it.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>3. The user interface is quite similar to the DOS CD version, that is to say that it has nine verbs instead of the twelve that the floppy versions had.</p><p>Apparently the EGA version has a very nice sunset when you first get to the dock, but that's not in any version that I have.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
Torbjörn Andersson<p>2. Another noticeable difference is that the Sega CD version tells you to "PRESS START" to begin the game. The Monkey Island has been moved to accommodate that, which I think slightly hurts the composition of the scene.</p><p>The intro doesn't even proceed to the lookout scene on its own. It just loops. When that happens, the music cuts off pretty awkwardly. That could be a ScummVM issue, but it was awkward when I tried it in an emulator too.</p><p><a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/LucasFilmGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasFilmGames</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/MonkeyIsland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MonkeyIsland</span></a> <a href="https://idlethumbs.social/tags/SegaCD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SegaCD</span></a></p>
