Global #seaice hit record low in February
The combined area of #ice around north and south poles hit new daily minimum in early February and stayed below previous record for rest of the month, reports EU's Copernicus #ClimateChange Service. "One of the consequences of a warmer world is melting sea ice," said deputy director, Samantha Burgess. "The record or near-record low sea ice cover at both poles has pushed global sea ice cover to an all-time minimum."

Scientists Uncover How a Melting Arctic Is Driving Droughts and Extreme Weather

New research reveals that Arctic sea ice loss can disrupt weather worldwide, making California drier while increasing winter humidity in parts of Europe.

Using advanced models, scientists isolated this effect, showing how melting ice alters atmospheric circulation. These findings could explain past extreme weather events and improve future climate forecasts.

Are you passionate about advancing polar environmental prediction and services? We invite you to apply to join one of the newly formed Task Teams within the #PCAPS project of the #WMO World Weather Research Programme. Apply by 31 March 2025.

I'm currently leading the Task Team on #SeaIce thickness data assimilation - would love to find the people we are missing for the team

There are lots of tasks teams already - take a look and see if any are relevant to you or those you work with

The irony (for which there was no space in the newspaper) is that this type of #SeaIce monitoring is almost solely based on ageing #US satellites.

#Europe has many excellent satellites, but exactly the type we need for this type of climate monitoring is not (yet) flying with the European flag on.

Should the #US satellites be shut down, we would go to Japanese or Chinese satellites, while waiting for the European ones to fly.

"The combined area of ice around the north and south poles hit a new daily minimum in early February.

The lack of #SeaIce means darker ocean surfaces and the ability of the Earth to absorb more sunlight, which accelerates the warming."

But:
Doesn't that also mean that the heat radiated from the poles increases? Sunlight comes in at near-glancing incidence, radiation happens in all directions. What's the balance?
