totally minor #scholarly complaint here.

Tracking down a reference from a source that provides a single footnote per paragraph with all its sources lumped is bad enough.

But this particular citation gives only a note number from Williams. Williams, it turns out, provides notes at the end of each chapter, and they aren't continuously numbered. So because there are 7 chapters, I need to check seven different "note 11"s.

We really don't have to make it this hard for each other.

Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly CommunicationThe Open Book Environment (OBE) Dashboard: A Tool for Increasing Publisher Transparency for Authors, Librarians, and the Scholarly CommunityIntroduction: The Open Book Environment (OBE) Dashboard is introduced as a pioneering tool aimed at fostering transparency and clarity in the realm of open access book publishing. In response to the growing need for accessible information for authors, librarians, and stakeholders, this dashboard aggregates data from a multitude of publishers into a centralized platform. Description of Program/Service: Employing a comprehensive set of criteria, including pricing for book processing charges (BPCs), licensing options, editorial quality statements, and self-archiving policies, the Dashboard evaluates publisher transparency. Through a color-coded system, it visually represents the degree of openness exhibited by each publisher, empowering authors to make informed decisions about where to publish their work. Next Steps: Looking ahead, the Dashboard’s dynamic nature allows for continuous updates, facilitating its role as an agent for positive change within the scholarly publishing community. As a versatile resource, the OBE Dashboard holds promise in enhancing efficiency, transparency, and accountability in open access book publishing. "Fundamentally, this is about what sort of system of #scholarly communication the research community (funders, institutions, individual researchers) wishes to be part of [...and...] in the spirit of not wasting a crisis, this represents an opportunity to reset the power imbalance between #libraries (and their institutions), and #publishers."

The Gemini Protocol is something I am instinctively enthused by -- and indeed have taken to browsing the #Geminispace with my preferred client (Lagrange).

#Gemini holds potential in supporting the rapid decentralized #publication of #scholarly work, esp. in specific disciplines. But is it too arcane to ever gain purchase, e.g. focus too textual, too outside HTML, too many users not au fait with markdown? I can't see much happening in the Geminispace at present. Am I missing something?

Time for an #introduction! Fairleigh Dickinson University Press left social media dormant for a spell, and now it's time to think about how best to be public and promote our #authors This feels like the right time and place.

With editorial offices in #Vancouver, British Columbia, FDUP publishes #scholarly #books for the academic market. Since our establishment in 1967 in Madison, New Jersey, we have published well over 1,500 titles in the humanities, arts, and social sciences.

It seems hopeful that #Mastodon and the Knowledge Commons instance are the right place to engage meaningfully with scholarly authors and readers.

We'll post about our recent titles and will share other posts about #universitypress #universitypresses #academic #scholarlypublishing #academicpublishing and related topics.
