RIP Kevan Staples. Growing up in North Bay in the late 1970s, I remember the first time I ever heard Rough Trade on the radio — it was "What's All the Furor About the Führer?" from Avoid Freud. To me, it was like hearing music from another planet (my first thought was "WTF is THIS?"), and it sent me into a punk/post-punk phase of my life that I've never left. I've lost track of the number of times I saw Rough Trade live (including their very last show) or Carole Pope solo (the latest being last fall in Stratford). With Kevan's passing, the world has become emptier. cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/kev #RoughTrade #CanadianMusic

@penworks
Think you’ve maybe understated the importance of this man’s influence on music of the time. Releasing music from a wide variety of independent artists, alongside getting airplay for his acts on John Peel’s show on Radio One, changed the landscape of music at the time. He triggered a sea change. Thanks Geoff. 👏🙏

Boygenius, The Record, 2023 on Interscope

Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus follow up to their self-titled EP as boygenius back in 2018. Loved that EP and all the other collaborations they’ve done together, and this full album is wonderful. Look forward to hearing more from them together and separately.

Produced by boygenius with additional production by Ethan Gruska, Melina Duterte, Sarah Tudzin, and Tony Berg. Mixed by Mike Mogis, recorded at Shangri-La in LA and Sound City.

My copy via Rough Trade online.

Grandaddy, Blu Wav, 2024 on Dangerbird

New record from 90s indie rock band Grandaddy – their first in ~6 years and the first since bassist Kevin Garcia died. Blu wav is meant to be a portmanteau of “Bluegrass” and “New Wave” but it makes me think of the blue wave we hoped to see in the last election.

Tucker Martine did the mixing, but Lytle wrote, performed, and produced all the songs, supported by Max Hart on Pedal Steel. Not sure what makes a Grandaddy album versus a Jason Lytle solo album but I’ll take it either way.

My copy – on “Nebula Vinyl” – via Rough Trade online.

Violent Femmes, Violent Femmes (box set), 2024 on Craft Recordings

This was one of my favorite albums of the 1980s (it came out on Slash Records in 1983), and I’ve been looking forever for a decent copy on vinyl. This box set, as you’d expect from Craft, is amazing. It includes a newly remastered version of the self-titled album itself, plus additional LPs of demos and live recordings, and a 7″ single: Ugly / Gimme the Car.

When it was first released, the […]
