Giacomo TesioI wish you were right, but with its "<a href="https://guix.gnu.org/blog/2019/joint-statement-on-the-gnu-project/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Joint Statement on the GNU Project</a>" <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=guix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Guix</a> joined the shitstorm that back then was after <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=rms" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RMS</a> head.<br><br>Back then, <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=stallman" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Stallman</a> selflessly left <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=mit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#MIT</a> and <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=fsf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FSF</a> to protect them from the mob justice, so that "joint back-stab", published in that specific moment was not just a sort of virtue signaling but a plain attack.<br><br>So much that, two years later 9 of those people signed the infamous "<a href="https://rms-open-letter.github.io/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">RMS open letter</a>" calling "for the removal of the entire Board of the Free Software Foundation" that dared reinstantiate RMS and even for "Richard M. Giacomo Tesio<span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.social/users/ekaitz_zarraga" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@ekaitz_zarraga@mastodon.social</a></span><br><br>The <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=guix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Guix</a> leaders are indeed the reason I don't even give it a try despite some great people like you working on it.<br><br>I will reconsider when I'll read a public apology for <a href="https://guix.gnu.org/blog/2019/joint-statement-on-the-gnu-project/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">this personal attack</a> to a neurodivergent <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=hacker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#hacker</a> such as <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=rms" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RMS</a>.<br><br>It worth to remember how that "joint stab in the back" was published while RMS was under attack because he dared defend <a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin_Minsky#Association_with_Jeffrey_Epstein" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Minsky's memory</a> from the same sort of mob justice that was then redirected (and amplified on <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=bigtech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BigTech</a> social media) against RMS himself.<br><br>Some of those "leaders" who signed that "joint statement" a couple years later signed <a href="https://rms-open-letter.github.io/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">an even worse attack</a> built <a href="https://stallmansupport.org/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">on top of lies</a>.<br><br>These sort of personal attacks have clear political goals, "incidentally" aligned with BigTech interests.<br><br>Now @zimoun@sciences.re could try to sort me among <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=stallman" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Stallman</a> fanboys to reinforce his beliefs, but in fact I'm pretty critical of RMS work: ultimately I think he based free software on a cold-war biased ideology, without a proper balance between communion (aka sharing strongly <b>protected</b> commons) and freedom. This huge error left space to <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=opensource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#opensource</a> and to the current use of <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=freesoftware" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FreeSoftware</a> by all sort of large corporations to abuse and subdue people.<br>Another (related) issue has been the total lack of a cohesive architectural design for <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=gnu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#GNU</a> system: RMS was too (inconsciously) fond of free market ideology to lead the movement's technically, and this lack of cohordination was turned by <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=esr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ESR</a> to the "bazaar" (not so subtle) sublimation of free market, to ease corporate exploitation of the high skilled labour of <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=hackers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#hackers</a>.<br><br>But in fact, with all of his political errors, he's still the most coherent and commited free software activist out there.<br><br>So I will consider Guix again when they will publish a joint apology with the same visibility the back-stab had in 2019.<br>

It's like saying: "hey, that's a great idea, but I don't have the energy/skill/resources/time to try explore it myself: why don't you give a try yourself? It will be fun!"<br><br>That's also how you can distinguish a free software built from hackers by a corporate open source with the same license: if you announce a fork, the hacker will be happy, because you are using and studying their work and giving back by exploring new paths, while the corporation will cry about the community split and similar bullshit.<br><br>___<br><br><a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=freesoftware" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FreeSoftware</a> is neither a solution to people problems nor a new identity: it's a gift.<br><br>A gift with political hopes and sometimes with some rules for reciprocity (<a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=copyleft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#copyleft</a>) designed to maximize the benefit that tje whole humanity get from such gift.<br><br>But still, just a gift.<br><br>Free Software hackers don't want to turn every people into hackers (<a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=rms" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RMS</a> is pretty explicit about that), and this is likely one of its worse limits. In fact, <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=fsf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FSF</a> talk about it as an ethical choise instead of a civic duty.<br><br>What they were missing is that a "freedom" that only few people can enact is in fact a privilege.<br><br>Unfortunately, in a cybernetic society where the overwhelming majority of agents defining the evolution of the world is constituted by software (thousands automatic agent for each human), people who cannot program, cannot really understand how the world they live in is ruled and by who.<br><br>So, like it or not, hacking is a prerequisite to a full citizenship in a cybernetic society just like reading and writing was in an industrial one in the last two centuries.<br><br>We can pretend otherwise, and the billionaries running <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=bigtech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#BigTech</a> corporations are more then happy if we do. But ultimately, we are going to be alienated, if we don't start fighting back.<br>

Giacomo Tesio<span class="h-card"><a href="https://fe.disroot.org/users/ramin_hal9001" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@ramin_hal9001@fe.disroot.org</a></span><br><br>I think <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=rms" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RMS</a> was (is?) unable to really abstract away from his roots as an American grow up during <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=coldwar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ColdWar</a>.<br><br>If he was, he would have been more explicit in looking for a syntesis between <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=freedom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#freedom</a> and <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=communion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#communion</a> as foundational model for <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=freesoftware" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FreeSoftware</a>.<br><br>I think I got a better ethical model with the <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=hackinglicense" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#HackingLicense</a>: <a href="https://encrypted.tesio.it/documents/HACK.txt" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://encrypted.tesio.it/documents/HACK.txt</a><br><br>There the two values that dominated 20th century history (and rhetorics) are pillars built on top of a third one, <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=hacker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#hacker</a>'s <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=curiosity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#curiosity</a> that provides a dynamic balance among the two (and a third one, candor, intended as intellectual honesty, that is honestly sharing your perspective and knowledge).<br><br>So while a think that a second fork from free software is actually needed (the first being <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=opensource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#opensource</a>, that as <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=osaid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#OSAID</a> made cristal clear, was solely a corporate tactic to exploit <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=hackers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#hackers</a>' labour while marginalizing them), I don't think it can be solely based on either freedom (like liberalism) or communion (like communism and socialism) but it need a new set of values to build upon.<br><br>Unfortunately, largely due to influence of the US rhetorics since the Marshal Plan, most hackers lack political awareness.<br><br>Which is a common issue among most oppressed people these days, but it's something even more dangerous when their skills are used to build weapons (including surveillance and manipulation tools) that furter help oppressors to oppress them and everybody else.<br><br>Yet I'm afraid the international socialist movement is completely missing all of these cultural, political and cybernetic dynamics and it's unlikely to evolve beyond 1900, neither in culture nor in methods or tech.<br><br>In Italy, for example, all largest unions, <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=cgil" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CGIL</a>, <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=cisl" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#CISL</a> and <a href="https://snac.tesio.it?t=uil" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#UIL</a>, are completely under US BigTech surveillance.<br><br><span class="h-card"><a href="https://friend.camp/users/garbados" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@garbados@friend.camp</a></span><br>
