Habr

Danie van der Merwe10 best operating systems for Raspberry Pi 5 — Good ideas of what to use a Pi for, too!

Over the years, Raspberry Pi boards have taken over the DIY projects landscape and have become synonymous with the term SBC. stgiga (they/them) :polygender_verify:
@vivianrose@mastodon.social

Is it possible to fit 16x16 font glyphs into a TV head?

As soon as I saw that these existed I knew it was something I had to try with my extension of GNU Unifont (called UnifontEX), which even has emoji. Unifont and UnifontEX are both 8x16 for anything that can reasonably fit, and 16x16 for anything that can't. I know that people have gone to 15x18 or 15x20, but some glyphs do truly require the full 16x16 cell size, so 16x18 or 16x18 would have to be the case. I'm of course wanting Unicode support (including characters above Plane 0, of which there are many in the font), so that means I'd likely need a Raspberry Pi. I'm also curious which of the formats at http://stgiga.github.io/UnifontEX/ would be best. There are a lot to choose from, including ones that were never offered by upstream Unifont.

I for the past while and especially recently had wanted to wear UnifontEX glyph displays either on my shirt or then a hat, so I could speak my more passionate topics without having to worry about voice level causing me problems.

I also had for the past week felt like I wanted to, if I gave a tech talk or ever appeared in a video, to never show my face and instead hide in a fursuit head, but if I trick one of these out with cat ears, then that would do. The Raspberry Pi could theoretically let me use it as a MIDI player, obviously at safe volumes.

Like, this TV head is something I'd actually want to do, and I'd sorta been thinking about adjacent topics recently. As an Earthbound reference, I would name mine "Lumine", after Lumine Hall from Earthbound. I'd go for a green shell for them and I'd predominantly use green or RGB colors for the text.

Interesting idea: put fursuit fur (or scales if you are a scalie) onto a TV head.

Fursuit head or TV head?
"Why not both?"

Obviously this will all be several years in the future due to my current state of nonemployment. Nonetheless I'm still curious. Also, if any of these ideas are inspirational, I give full permission to use them. Same for the font. Danie van der MerweA serial console allows you to see the boot logs even before the Linux kernel has started booting! Therefore, a serial console attached to your Raspberry Pi can help you find causes of problems like the following:

* A new Linux distribution that you flashed on your Raspberry Pi does not boot.
* Your Raspberry Pi boots into an older kernel even though you installed a newer kernel provided by your distribution maintainer via apt/pacman/dnf.
* You installed a new kernel using apt/pacman/dnf but now the Ethernet port does not work and you can't SSH into it to uninstall that kernel.
* Your Raspberry Pi does not boot at all.
* You are learning kernel development and want to see why the change that you made is preventing the kernel from booting.
* You have so many Raspberry Pis that you have run out of displays to connect to and just want to watch the boot logs to sanity check if they are booting correctly or not.

I actually already have one of these USB serial adaptors that I'd been using to flash Tasmota software onto my Sonoff WiFi power switches.

See Using a USB Serial Adapter (UART) to Help Debug Raspberry Pi

A UART attached to your Raspberry Pi can help you troubleshoot issues with your Raspberry Pi.
