officially switched off my iCloud photo backup and sharing as now moved all files over to Synology Photo/Drive and Proton Drive, current step in moving family off the Apple Cloud, already have Domain and email moved to Proton, Passwords in Proton Pass with Bitwarden as a backup after their last faux pas. Should be off big tech in full soon.

Who knew doing IT support for the partner and kids would be such a political event, they are driving me for a change!

FOSS NEWS

Proton Drive and Docs get support for collaboration with users without Proton account:

Organic Maps migrates repos to their own Forgejo instance, because they got blocked by GitHub, because a dev was temporarily geolocated in a US-sanctioned region:
alternativeto.net/news/2025/3/
(Why does GitHub have to know the geolocation of their users in the first place? But at least the Organic Maps project has the capacity to self-host, they successfully took control into their own hands.)

ReactOS 0.4.15 released with kernel improvements, improved hardware support, support for additional audio formats, multiple output channels etc:

MPV 0.40 released with native HDR support on Linux, Wayland color management protocol support, new script for video alignment and zooming, new selection menu when right-clicking common buttons etc:

Shotcut 25.03 released with ‘Text style’ preset to the ‘Generate Text on Timeline’ function in Subtitles, ‘Copy Current’ and ‘Copy All’ options to Filters, vertical and horizontal parameters to the No Sync video filter, a ‘Toggle Filter Overlay’ option to the Player menu etc:

Ente Photos v1 released with encrypted data stored in three separate clouds, in three different locations; on-device search capabilities for people and objects in photos, ability to automatically highlight past special moments and important people, with a widget option to relive these memories directly from the home screen etc:

XZ Utils 5.8 released with performance boost for the liblzma compression library; new --no-sync option; xz, xzdec, and lzmainfo components updated to replace non-printable characters with question marks when printing messages (to prevent malicious filenames from sending escape sequences to a terminal) etc:

Proton · Proton Drive and Docs now support collaboration with users without Proton accounts | ProtonDiscover the latest Proton Drive updates designed to help you collaborate and enhance your workflow without compromising security.

" 200 or so, countries world-wide, and they only include terms and cite laws, that they know apply to them. "
So many corporate simps ignore this little fact.

Do you see Proton cite terms for Japan or Korea, or any other friendly nation? No, because Proton is only subject to the laws where they are a registered business. Proton only (and others like them) worries about the ones that apply to them, and they include the United States of America for a reason.

For me, this is HUGE!!!

Proton Drive, & Docs now both support sharing files & documents with users who don't have a proton account. Doing so STILL preserves the End-to-End-Encryption. Also, there is a new "Collaborative Folder" feature that allows seamless file-sharing.

#unplugtrump

Oh, I am aware of your simping trolling behavior for Proton, but I refuse to acknowledge your nonsense on my old account.

You do not get to pick and choose what laws you follow, and only when you feel they are connivent. That is not how laws work. Proton does not list any laws or bi-laws concerning, the "France" (random), for example, because they could, careless since they do not apply to them. They're not a registered business in "France" (random). The same way, I and most people here, don't care about what the laws are in North Korea, for example. Because they do not apply to most of us here.

There are over 200 independent states or nations or territories, or whatever, but you don't see terms and guidelines for all 200. The reason for this is that a business, like a person, only cares about the laws that apply to them. It is not rocket science.

Proton sells products and services to people in France, South Korea, Germany, Canada, Etc... Etc... Just as you could sell digital products and services to these people, but you would not need to put terms concerning each individual nation for each individual customer, because it would be the responsibility of your customer to follow their own laws, and the only laws that would apply to you are those you are subject to. Again, you don't see any business on the internet, listing terms for all 200 or so independent states, or nations, or territories, or whatever, but you do see them including only the ones that apply to themselves.

Proton, is subject to Us-jurisdiction and that is why they include terms and conditions surrounding US Laws. They'll argue that it only applies to Proton Wallet, but again, you don't get to pick and choose, when laws apply to an individual, anymore than you can a business. But even if it were true (it's not), they could still be influences and impacted by the laws and governing body of the United States, since they were not immune to them.

In contrast, I and most people here are immune to whatever goes on in, North Korea (random example). I can freely write all about how awful Kim Jong Un is, even though it is illegal to do so in North Korea. There is nothing legally stopping me, and no one within that governing body could ever influence me to stop either.

You like Proton. I am happy you found a provider you like. But you, choose to like or disliking Proton, does not change their legal standing.
