Idea is you briefly chat with your focusmate, say what you want to work on, then catch up for a minute or two at the end of the session to report on progress. Can be computer work, tidying, meditation, exercise, cooking, music practice or anything. One of the great joys is the amazing diversity of people you meet and often some fascinating conversations. This week I have worked with an inspiring junior barrister from Manchester, various PhD students from US, Europe and India, a pianist in Seoul and a charity manager in Cambridge. For a couple of weeks now, it has been alerting me that a break-glass sensor needs a new battery. The replacement battery? I’ve had it all along. In fact, if I glance over my left shoulder, I can see it sitting on the corner of my other desk with three of its companions. My failure to spend five minutes replacing the battery has resulted in precisely nothing happening. Well, except for the security company calling to upsell me on new equipment—a generous offer I politely declined. What they didn’t offer, of course, was to replace the battery themselves.
