Interesting observation, since restarting the solar bot I'm getting spikes in load from my mastodon instance, I assume it's from that solar bot posting and then the fediverse requesting data as the post permeates through.

It lasts for about 2 hours and roughly an extra 4W so each post is 8Wh? That's not insignificant - am I misunderstanding this?

In theory I should see a similar spike when I send this post.

In the time of hard choices do math.

I was not sure about which hardware should I use for my media server. I thought that my 10-core custom-built NAS is too overpowered for it. And with Synology DS423+ I’ll save money on electricity bills. So I performed an experiment, made some calculations and can use facts now instead of guesses.

Power consumption varies by 30 watts. It’s 2 € of savings per month. 2 € per month for the opportunity to sell my Synology NAS and use the server I built myself. I’m in.

I need to re-download all my iso-images now )) Good opportunity to review and clean my collection a bit.

⚡️ Yesterday @oluOnline posted a question about the alignment in aims and speculativity of #solarpunk and #permacomputing.

It sparked off a longer debate about #sustainability, #powerconsumption, #datacenters, #Apple, and #AI, in which @mattwilcox took the position, that humankind will always strive for improvement, we just need to find the least harmful way to do it, while @cferdinandi argued, that increasing power consumption will always be a setback, especially when it’s not improving anything (as in the case with AI).

I couldn’t really agree with myself who was more right. Because of course they are both right in each their respect, aren’t they? And that is kind of the central paradox.

Go read the original post and the thread right here, it’s really interesting and an important debate.

Geeks for Social ChangeOlu (@oluOnline@social.gfsc.studio)At the risk of pissing off both communities, are both #solarpunk and #permacomputing both aligned in aims and also highly speculative at the moment? I think with permacomputing in particular I'm like "that sounds great but how do we radically change global supply chains and still have computers?"
