March & early April in the forest summarized: all recent Springs have been a different kind of mess and this one is too! Late and early Spring species collide in the heated atmosphere.

Wingless ground beetles, who need not heat any flight muscle and therefore tolerate cold temperature foraged less than normal, while all sorts of unexpected heat-loving bees and wasps are buzzing around ! I do not know what plants feed them. They woke up in primroses season, i.e. way ahead of vegetation.

And Oaks start displaying their shoots 1 month ahead of schedule, at a time when night frosts can still bite them!

Trillium by the thousands today in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The weather was warm enough for snakes to be out along the trails. Dear Friends,
These two trees, a beech on the left, a walnut on the right have been objects of admiration for some time.

Yesterday, the sky was this gray.

Recalling this moment -
the cool air moving above and around,
through my nose, into my lungs, then back out
head upward - breathe, click, breathe.

Stating the obvious - all of this is a miracle.

“But Thoreau also knows that the calendar, like Emerson's "tradition," has hardened into a formal and highly abstracted system, and that its present lines of demarcation are arbitrary. As categories of perception, neither the months nor the seasons, traditionally demarcated, are responsive to nature's actual currents of change because they have become distanced from perception, which no longer informs them.“

“They go publishing the ‘chronological cycles’ and ‘movable festivals of the Church’ and the like, but how insignificant are these compared with the annual phenomena of your life, which fall within your experience! The signs of the zodiac are not nearly of that significance to me that the sight of a dead sucker in the spring is. That is the occasion for an immovable festival in my church. Another kind of lent.”

the first skunk cabbages of the season; this day marks the beginning of my calendar

I want to know when and where events like this occur in my place, to mark and celebrate the first skunk cabbage emerging from the ice and the start of spring, the first leaf unfurled on the beech outside my door, etc.

I have had many false starts over the years trying to keep a record of these occasions but I keep trying and will likely continue
