This Is My Glasgow<p>I came across this threshold ghost sign at the entrance to a shop beside Kelvinhall Subway Station in Glasgow. As far as I can work out, it's for an old department store which used to occupy the site.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ghostsign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ghostsign</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/partick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>partick</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecturephotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecturephotography</span></a></p>

This Is My Glasgow<p>While I can't find a reference to it, I seem to remember that there is a clause in the title for this land that means it can never be built on, which may explain why it survives to this day when the last burial in it took place in 1857. Running parallel to Keith Street is Purdon Street, which another remider of the life of John Purdon as it's named after him.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/partick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>partick</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/graveyard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graveyard</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/burialground" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>burialground</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/quakers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>quakers</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>The former Quaker Burial Ground on Keith Street in Partick. Glasgow's smallest graveyard, it was donated to the Quakers by the local land owner John Purdon in 1711, and his wife, Margaret Simspon (known better known as Quaker Meg), was said to have been the first person buried in it. There are no headstones in it, not because they have been lost over time, but because historically Quaker burials were not marked in this way. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/partick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>partick</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/graveyard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graveyard</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/quakers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>quakers</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>The entrance to former Saint Peter's Boys School on Stewartville Street in the Partick area of Glasgow. This Is My Glasgow<p>Designed by Duff and Cairns for the Rosevale Cinema Company, it originally had a capacity of 1,894, with a large balcony, and a Christie organ. It was later expanded to seat 2,100, making it the largest Back Court cinema in the city. It closed as a cinema in 1965 before becoming a bingo hall, a snooker club, a supermarket and finally a charity shop. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/oldcinema" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>oldcinema</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowbuildings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowbuildings</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/partick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>partick</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/rosevalecinema" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rosevalecinema</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/tenement" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tenement</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowtenements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowtenements</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecturephotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecturephotography</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>It may seem unlikely, but this British Heart Foundation shop on Dumbarton Road in the Partick area of Glasgow was once home to the Rosevale Cinema. This Is My Glasgow<p>While you can still just about make out its name along the front of the building where it once was, the Western Bar no longer exists and the site is now occupied by a branch of Greggs. In an ironic twist of fate, the Dowanhill Church in Hyndland, whose congregation were key players in the fight to keep Hyndland dry, is now home to the Cottiers Bar. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/partick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>partick</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/oldpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>oldpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ghostsign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ghostsign</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/hyndland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hyndland</span></a>&nbsp;</p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>While the temperance movement managed to ensure Hyndland had no bars until the Rock opened, in the face of many protests, in 1966, the Partick Wine, Spirit and Beer Trade Defence Association helped ensure the residents of Partick always had plenty of choices of where to drink, a situation which continues right up until today. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/partick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>partick</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/oldpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>oldpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ghostsign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ghostsign</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/hyndland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hyndland</span></a>&nbsp;</p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>The ghost signs on this wall on Peel Street in Glasgow reveal it was once home to the Western Bar, one of 44 pubs in the Partick area of the city in the 1930s. By contrast, the neighbouring area of Hyndland had none. The difference was due, in part, to the wonderfully named Partick Wine, Spirit and Beer Trade Defence Association, and its one-time president John Mossman, who ran the Western Bar in the early 1900s. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/partick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>partick</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ghostsign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ghostsign</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/hyndland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hyndland</span></a>&nbsp;</p>
