You don't have to know every single fact about your special interests for them to be special interests!
It's about how they make us feel and how we engage with them!

I don't know every fact about badgers, or Star Trek, but that doesn't mean they're any less an intensive autistic interest to me.

Emma-Jean Thackray's series on her experience of neurodivergence and music continues, tonight's theme is Solitude.
Fascinating to hear the experience of "that weird kid in class who could never sit still" and how really, it was society making it weird for her, she just needs some space.

Schools man, they fuck you up....

For the change of seasons, I used to do all relevant #spellwork, #cleansing, decor, card pulls, and other seasonal #rituals in one day during the Solstices or Equinoxes. I've realized that's not really the move given my #AuDHD brain lol. So lately I'm slowly doing some cool tasks leading up to the #Fall #Equinox.

This is also my first change of season since deciding to do semi-regular screen breaks/dopamine detoxes, and I'm looking forward to it! I took my first ever intentional detox back in July, and holy shit, I felt so calm during it. Going forward, I'm planning on doing them for 5-7 days during Solstices and Equinoxes, so my first seasonal detox is coming up this Monday. I get overstimulated easily, so I'm hoping that disconnecting from so much stimuli semi-regularly is enough to keep me regulated. I'm thinking about adding a short 2-3 day social media break mid-way through seasons too if I need it.

"I made this planner to help neurodivergent people" and they mean autistic people "we need a neurodivergent community for craft hyperfixations" and they mean ADHD "We're trying to make this neurodivergent friendly" and they mean ADHD+autism "here's signs you might be neurodivergent" and they mean ADHD "my neurodivergent partner's routine" and they mean ADHD "how to help neurodivergent communication" and they mean autism
I'M SO TIRED OF THIS
"NEURODIVERGENT" DOES NOT JUST MEAN AUTISM & ADHD !!

One of the hardest things about raising a neurodivergent child is that the approved strategies for behaviour management Just Don’t Work.

When you, the parent, are undiagnosed, unsupported & still in denial & shame about your own lifelong neurodivergence the obvious conclusion is ‘it’s like this because I am bad & broken & inadequate & I may as well die’.

From the inside, the experience of being a child like this, or a parent like this, is living with constant, extreme terror. Self loathing & suicidal ideation become part of the daily air we breathe.

My kids are adults now but I still hold this terror in my body. Every day.

The way to understand these kids’ extreme behaviours is to LISTEN TO US. Please.

We should normalise wearing name tags at any party or social gathering with more than three to six people.

Yes, even ones where people supposedly already know each other.

For some things I have a memory that consistently impresses most people. Or at least used to. For remembering names, and especially matching them with faces? Or even matching faces/names to people I know e.g. online? I'm abysmal and it causes me a lot of stress even in social settings where people like me and I like people.

Don't get me wrong, there's some real value there. But it's an enormous red flag that it's framed as a personal responsibility for people who need support to become *dependent* on a technology like this. It's just another excuse for neurotypicals to not have to change their behavior.

Ars making the accessibility case for "AI” as a support tool for neurodivergent people, but fails to point out that none of these workplace accommodations require “AI”. Using "AI" just allows neurotypicals to "accommodate" us with no effort on their part.

As the article notes, it breeds a dependence. Not sure that's the win the article wants to frame it as…

I don't particularly enjoy my experience of the world.

But there are times when #neurodivergence can be of use...

Ever place your ear against a fence post, and heard the barbwire singing in the wind?

Or stand outside in nighttime stillness, and hear mystery low rumbling from kilometers distant?

"What could that be?"

That is what some memories are like, for me.

Little dog with a grungy chew toy, I sit alone with a memory, and gnaw endlessly on it.

Sometimes, useful!

Sometimes, say "Oh!"
