@tchambers @Vivaldi ... and I guess that with their current attitude, it's pointless to suggest the same to #Mozilla?

Somehow my main #Firefox instance lost the auth tokens with the #Mozilla account. It asks for a new login, but when I try, it sends me an email with a code that I must use before a 5m timeout, but for some reason the mail takes more than 5m to reach my inbox. Took me several attempts to get it right.
It then asked me to generate a recovery key, suggested me to store it on my password manager, and then this: It asks for a hint that will be presented to you to help you remember where you put it.
Google needs strong measures imposed on it to prevent it from using artificial intelligence to extend its dominance in online search, a U.S. Department of Justice attorney says. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2025/04/22/tech/google-search-monopoly-doj-trial/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #business #tech #mozilla #verizon #apple #alphabet #google #doj
Some of the remedies proposed in the case risk the future of our Firefox browser and Gecko browser engine—the last remaining non-Big Tech browser engine.
In the coming weeks, we hope to see a shift to focus on remedies that can improve search competition without harming the pro-competitive role that Firefox and other independent browsers play in the ecosystem.
I’ve been saying for a while that I can’t imagine how Mozilla continues without this funding from Google. I’m not particularly opposed to the government breaking up monopolies, but this entire case doesn’t make sense. What does it look like to break out Chrome as a separate company? How could such a company make money without a search deal that has how been deemed to be illegal?

I suppose I could switch to #EXWM (again), but can it do keystroke intercepts the way #StumpWM can?
My reasons for trying StumpWM are:
1) try another window manager
2) learn some lisp
3) use emacs keystrokes in #Mozilla #Firefox. Or at least turn off ctrl-w to kill the window.
If EXWM can do 3, then it may be worth trying until I can get StumpWM working.
Alright I now regret using #Firefox. Not because #Mozilla did shoot with the source code. Because its blocker doesn't protect my #privacy. I also regret reading about ADHD on my Android phone on #Chrome or even having a normal #Android phone.
Last week I read about ADHD on the web using Android's stock Chrome, now Google ads is showing me advertisements about ADHD. Down with you Google.
If anyone cares about their privacy, they should avoid #Google like #plague It's a pity still people use the services it offers including the search engine.
The #Web has become a bad and creepy place. For now I'm switching to #LibreWolf.
Edit: Curid from Rust offtopic Matrix room suggested this:

For Firefox it says partial protection is provided and they can fingerprint my broswer.

Google lost its ad monopoly trial, Mozilla is concerned about the future of the company:

("If the Department of Justice truly wants to fix competition, they can’t solve one problem by creating another." - as much as I dislike Mozilla, I think they are mostly right here. It was a really poorly made decision, and won't solve anything, as for Mozilla, they will probably get paid by Microsoft to make Bing the default in Firefox, or slowly go bankrupt, and leave the Gecko engine to the community which won't have enough capacity to compete with Google (or if they will be forced to sell Chrome and step down from the Chromium project, it will likely be Microsoft, to maybe kill off Chrome like they did with Skype and Atom, and take control of Chromium), Firefox and its forks will be the next Internet Explorers...)
("Gecko powers Firefox (and other independent browsers) and puts privacy and people first." - nah, unfortunately Firefox is pretty far from a privacy-respecting browser nowadays. A real privacy browser should be private without any manual hardening. But it needs to stay alive because it's the base for some real privacy browsers like LibreWolf.)

So -- the fallout. But first, Google is appealing the verdict.
When all is said and done, Mozilla and Apple are both likely to pay the price, although Apple is a big fish and can probably talk its way out of some the damages. But Mozilla is in danger. There was always that question about the implications of its intimate affair with Google.

Sadly, I'm afraid it might be too late, but… @soapdog on a #Mozilla we actually want, not what is has become:
“I think Mozilla dropped the ball.
…
I want […] a browser that is a user agent and not a browser that is silicon valey serf that sometimes behaves like a brat.
I don't want Mozilla AI, let another foundation take care of that. I want a Mozilla Labs pushing the boundaries of the IndieWeb and one that I can trust not to be part of that cursed shoal."

In case you're wondering what "technical and interaction data" Mozilla collects, you can find the list here:
https://dictionary.telemetry.mozilla.org/apps/firefox_desktop?itemType=metrics&page=1
I just discovered Mozilla has made it mandatory to enable 'Send technical and interaction data to Mozilla' and 'Install and run studies' in order to have access to 'Firefox Labs'.
So far, no issues with #kubuntu 25.04 on #framework 13" AMD
The upgrade tried to force the broken #Firefox snap on me again though: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/2089159
Am I crazy for considering modifying the #Mozilla #Firefox code and recompiling just to get #emacs -like shortcuts? Even just ctrl-s for search and ctrl-w for cut (or at least turning off ctrl-w = close the window) would be huge time savers and "oops" removers.
Supposedly there are ways to add some #javascript to dirs to make these changes, but honestly, it seems more difficult than tweaking & recompiling.
Seems that extensions can't get deep enough to change some shortcuts.
