Yes, they can. Especially if there are aging, are heated a lot, are damaged, etc.<br>It doesn't hurt to transfer stuff to glass containers. though <a href="https://c.im/tags/plastic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>plastic</span></a> lids and silicon seals can degrade and shed microplastics or other chemicals (but way less than if the whole container is plastic).<br>To reduce my overall <a href="https://c.im/tags/microplastic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>microplastic</span></a> intake, I transfer much of the food I buy to glass containers (many of which are glass jam, salsa, pickle jars, that I clean and reuse). <br>For liquids like cooking oil and Ribena which sit on my shelf for months at a time -- these, I transfer to wine bottles. <br>Beware: canola oil looks like pino grigio so be careful which one you pour into your wine glass!</p><p><a href="https://www.foodfacts.org/articles/should-you-throw-out-plastic-containers-microplastics-kitchen-safety" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">foodfacts.org/articles/should-</span><span class="invisible">you-throw-out-plastic-containers-microplastics-kitchen-safety</span></a></p>
