Impressions of my recent artist talk exploring the fascinating intersection of human and machine creativity through a fun round of charades with the audience and SDXL.

The talk led us through a rich historical tapestry—from AI pin-ups to Lenna (the Playboy centrefold as tech benchmark), early "women computers," and the origins of cybernetics, cyborgs, and cyberfeminism.

Every second year there is a course on light art at the University of Arts in Helsinki, teached by yours truly (yes, I'm one lucky bitch). The artworks done by the students are presented in Lux In exhibition, an indoors part of Lux Helsinki festival in January. Let me proudly showcase the artworks of the latest edition!

Let's start with Juurehine (made of roots) by Siri Haapanen, a gently rippling animation, oscillating between symbols of Carelian imagery, based on the artist's roots in Carelia. The matrix is formed of old photos of the area in dia slides, mostly collected from public archives, but including some of the artist's own family history as well.

Most of Finnish Carelia was lost in WWII and the fate of the people who moved from there to Western Finland is a wound in our history, in many ways. The Carelian culture has been fading until recent times, but the young generation has started bringing it to the fore, with fierce and enthusiasm. Well done, young generation!

And BTW:
The new UrbanFlow.art website is built completely in @eleventy
With the help of the native plugins mostly, only the image slider we use on some pages is java script.

It's such a relieve to have found a solid alternative to all the CMS' we used in the past...
I never enjoyed coding for the web more! 🙂 👍 🙏

Highly recommended for anybody with at least some basic coding experience.
The docs are great too!

The Black Forest region is historically closely linked to the clock industry and is world famous for its handcrafted cuckoo clocks. This iconic symbol of the Black Forest has become a global phenomenon since the 18th century. Cuckoo clocks are exported all over the world and are familiar to almost all Black Forest tourists. In recent decades, technological developments have transferred clocks into the digital sphere, providing the foundation for this project.

An exciting mix of tradition and innovation can be discovered in the work ‘World's Largest Cuckoo Clock (Digital)’. The sculpture in front of the German Clock Museum, which is over seven metres high, takes up the clock-making history of the Black Forest and one of its icons: the cuckoo clock. The clock is depicted as a pixelated abstraction with an empty clock face and can only be fully experienced through an augmented reality app.

As familiar, the time and cuckoo can be seen on the half and full hour. In this case, however, the digital ‘cuckoo’ consists of hundreds of video recordings of cuckoo clocks made by people from over 30 countries around the world. The sculpture thus opens a digital door to the global phenomenon of the cuckoo clock by bringing together worldwide versions of the Black Forest export product in one place. The work is also modelled on the parasitic habits of the natural cuckoo, which lays its eggs in the nests of other birds - here, however, the eggs of others are laid in a digital nest.
