Sometimes things don’t go as planned but, you make a new plan. Working on my (bee propaganda) next print about the future of pollination for Manufactured Ecosystems, I dropped my inked plate with the text and slipped - after completing 9 bees. 😔 I was pretty frustrated, but I started again from scratch.

But I didn’t want the original, with all that work to go to waste. 🧵1/n

As described, this is my 16” x 20” print with a ring of bees plus one in the middle with collaged text in bronze. Clockwise from top: two leaf cutter bees (Megachile relativa and M. brevis), blue orchard mason bee (Osmia lignaria), the rusty patched bumblebee* (Bombus affinis), a sweat bee (Agapostemon sericeus), eastern carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica), the common eastern bumblebee (B. impatiens), a long-horned bee (Melissodes sp.) and centre: eastern snail-shell nesting bee (O. conjuncta). The text reads “Our Fate is Tied to that of the Insects” in a ring around the assorted bees.

This print “Occam’s Razor” is about the Law of Economy or Parsimony postulated by Scholastic philosopher William of Ockham (1287–1347), “pluralitas non est ponenda sine necessitate” or entities should not be needlessly multiplied. My linocut print of Occam’s Razor shows Ockham himself, inspired by an image of him from a stained glass window in Surrey, the proverbial and labelled razor and many unlikely things (aliens, ghosts, cryptozoological creatures) it would cut away. It is printed by hand, from two carved relief lino blocks in lavender, silver, pale yellow and phthalo blue on delicate Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper. Each print is 8" by 9" or 20.3 cm by 22.9 cm.

Made the shirts today with @deflectric ! He did the dandelion block printing, and I hand painted details like the bees and roots and pollen. Really glad that the dandelions that got mowed over grew right back in 2 days, ya can't kill these sturdy hos.

Will be showing these off at Fruit Flea Market in Durham on April 20th.

I made this piece mostly for myself. I've long loved the shapes these overpasses drew against the sky. Maybe it's just a matter of growing up near them. I, classically, forgot to reverse this from my sketch, so the curves don't match reality, but maybe for the best.

Happy birthday to Canadian 🇨🇦 geneticist Irene Ayako Uchida (1917-2013)! In my #linocut Uchida is shown surrounded by chromosones, with anomalies (shown with pink arrows) due to radiation exposure, based on one of her research papers. A strand of DNA is hidden in the image (as her watchband).⁠

My beaver lino block print is hand printed on delicate, translucent, handmade Japanese paper with a deckle edge. This is a North American beaver (Castor canadensis), symbol of Canada. 🇨🇦

April 7 is International Beaver Day. While a species of “least concern” according to the IUCN Red List of mammals, numbers of North American beavers have been literally decimated since colonization. 🧵1/2
