Scheibe & GüntzelHIMMELI II In the frame of our project PRESERVED // Rågens rike / Finnland 204/25 we dealt with the traditional himmeli objects that are made of rye straw and are now used as a traditional Christmas decoration. In the former days they would be used to ask for a good harvest. In our winter chapter (November 2024) we asked the people of the area where our project is taking place (Vörå in Finland-Sweden) to join us to create a huge himmeli by using light tubes. The village came and in joint forces the ephermeral himmeli installation was created. The whole project is carried out with the help of the village. Our next stay will take place soon, stay tuned. I did have time to see two friends and two exhibitions and have several meals. <a href="https://toot.community/tags/AnthonyMcCall" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#AnthonyMcCall</a>' Solid Light at <a href="https://toot.community/tags/TateModern" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#TateModern</a> was obviously good. In addition to artworks, it was interesting to see how they made people interact.<a href="https://toot.community/tags/ElectricDreams" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ElectricDreams</a> was very interesting from the history of <a href="https://toot.community/tags/LightArt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LightArt</a> view point. Also, quite a many female artists, finally. And no, they weren't there just because of their gender.

Now in Turku waiting for the ferry to Stockholm, from there to Lüdenscheid for Lichtrouten <a href="https://toot.community/tags/LightArt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LightArt</a> festival via an exhibition in Kolding. A quick stop in London for Anthony McCall and friends, a video mapping conference in Lille, dash to Skopje for a project planning session for a festival (also, bureks), a week in Belgrade (was supposed to be relaxing, let's see), another festival in Kronach and back home with a coffee break in STHLM. Should be fun!

Mia KivinenEvery second year there is a course on light art at the University of Arts in Helsinki, teached by yours truly (yes, I'm one lucky bitch). The artworks done by the students are presented in Lux In exhibition, an indoors part of Lux Helsinki festival in January. Let me proudly showcase the artworks of the latest edition! Let's start with Juurehine (made of roots) by Siri Haapanen, a gently rippling animation, oscillating between symbols of Carelian imagery, based on the artist's roots in Carelia. The matrix is formed of old photos of the area in dia slides, mostly collected from public archives, but including some of the artist's own family history as well. Most of Finnish Carelia was lost in WWII and the fate of the people who moved from there to Western Finland is a wound in our history, in many ways. The Carelian culture has been fading until recent times, but the young generation has started bringing it to the fore, with fierce and enthusiasm. Well done, young generation!
